Edit: I am a retard, here is the correct post

Lets talk axles, not just any axles, but big beefy rear axles.
Which is the strongest with upgrades (Dana 70) and without upgrades(Dana 70). Which has the best clearance stock (d60) and which has the best clearance shaved (D60). Also, which is the cheapest overall to build (d70). Also what is the max tire size for a rig that is 4000 lb fully loaded. I put my guesses in quotes...

I have a season pass for Extreme 4x4, I will keep you updated and let you know if it come on. What is the exact name of the show, I will see if I can find a rerun and record it. Also, congrats on getting a feature on a syndicated show, that is a big deal for anyone. Keep up the good work!
:thefinger EXTREME4X4!!!I APPLIED FOR THE HOST JOB,GOT EMAILS BACK,SENT THEM A FEW PICS OF MY RIDES,TALKED TO THE PRODUCER AND DIDNT GET IT!!!WTF??BEAT BY A CANADIAN AND A WOMAN WHO CANT WELD!!!(TACK,TACK,TACK)
THAT SHOW IS MORE LIKE A HALF HOUR INFO-MERCIAL,THEY ARE USUALLY PIMPIN SOMETHING THEY GOT FOR FREE!!!
OH!! AND READ THE CREDITS REAL CLOSE, ON MOST OF THE SPIKE TV AUTOMOTIVE PROGRAMS, THEY HAVE A MECHANIC IN THE CREDITS THAT ISNT A HOST!!
WHO ACTUALLY BELIEVED THAT THE HOSTS WERE REALLY BUILDING THOSE RIDES??

Nice thread jack Ape:no: Extreme 4x4 is pretty easy to rip apart, I have only seen a couple of episodes, but some of the designs are kind of weird hillibillyish. Case in point that Ranger thing with the extended cab flaps welded to the side. On the flip side, keep in mind you dont have a lot of alternatives for 4x4 tv shows. I am happy it shows up on tv at all. Also the stuff on the show is just barely worse than most 4x4 mags out there that have many years of experience.

Thread jack off......14 bolt rules, cheap Detroit, plentiful, easy to set up (like 9") many different widths with just a hub change... no narrowing and a shorter pinion for more rear driveline length. Arguably stronger than a 60 and when you drag it on rocks ( all the time) you dont feel guilty as opposed to a fancy 60 housing. Same applies to shaving the housing, an hour of grinding and you have better clearance than an unmodified 70 with it's pricey lockers and super wideness (Dana 70 is sweet though). Dana 60 is nice if you throw $$ at it. Stock 60 30 spline = not that great.

So why are dana 70's so great? I know toe loves them. As far as 14 bolts go, aren't the gear selections somewhat limited (I know they are coming out with a 5.29 for it, but the wait for the gear sets is crazy long I heard). On the same token, dana 70 gears skip from 5.13 to 5.86, so the gear selections for that still sucks. As far as strength goes, how do the stock 14 bolts compare to stock dana 70's? Dana 70's come stock with 35 spline axles right?

YES THEY DO INDEED COME WITH 35 SPLINE,AND THE COVER SIMPLY LOOKS ALOT BETTER THAN A 14BOLT.60 AND 70 COVERS ARE THE SAME, SO YOU'LL HAVE THE SAME LOOK FRONT/REAR.GEARS ALL THE WAY UP TO 7.17'S! :D

m vote goes to mogs!!!

not... it goes to a built 60. when you do a 60, your done. period. end of subject. next chaper, please.

60s are definately the allstars. you can get almost any locker imaginable, any gear imaginable, they span over 40 decades and are still in production. ultimate beef.

what does suck though, is when people take a 60 and then put like stupid low ring and pinion gears in them... like 7.17's. the pinion in that case, is rediculously small. bigger ring gear, smaller pinion. when its that deep, the torque multiplication is nuts, AND you have a pinion that has a smaller diameter than a 44 pinion (say.. 4.11 d44's)

my choice on mogs is simple. im broke, i dont have money to build a set of good 60s. mogs have a lot of advantages also. clearance(obviously). theyre already geared, AND have selectable lockers.. STOCK

but the biggest advantage to mogs is that the axle is not achieving its full gear reduction until the hub assembly. the ring and pinion is only about a 3.(something):1. the rest happens in the hub. therefore meaning... less stress on the r&p, less stress on the housing, on the shafts, bearings and carrier! the hub then multiplies the speed over 2 more times before it hits the wheel... thats what makes them strong... and why they are very difficult to break

DID SAMBO CALL ME A THREAD JACK OFF??
ANYWAYS THIS THREAD IS ABOUT REAR AXLES??THE 14B WINS HANDS DOWN
1-CHEAP AND EASY TO COME BY
2-CHEAP TO MOD.
3-GEAR SET-UP IS MUCH EASIER THAN ANY DANA FR OR REAR AXLE
4-SHAVE IT AND GET THE CLEARANCE AS GOOD AS A DANA 60
5-CHEAP LOCKERS OR REALLY EASY TO WELD
6-1.5 INCH AXLE SHAFTS JUST LIKE THE DANA 70 (ONLY DIFFERENCE IS IN THE SPLINE COUNT 30SPLINE 14B 35SPLINE DANA70)
7-REAR DISK BRAKES ARE A VERY EASY AND CHEAP MOD TO MAKE
8-YOU DONT HAVE TO PAY DYNA-TRAC ALL THE MONEY TO HAVE A CHEAP BOMB PROOF AXLE

I like the fo fo fo-teen bolt for all the previously stated reasons and the fact that the stock lower shock mounts hold secret magical powers that keep your rig from rolling or even getting scratched (See Rockape). If you remove the magic shock mounts your rig is guaranteed to flop, roll, backflip and flop some more (See Spoon).

Eaton-Ford?? I know ford uses eaton limited slips but that's all I got. I vote mogs for obvious clearance, damn good gear reduction, Selectable lockers, and price. At a pair for cheaper then a well built 60.

But what do I know I'm just an XJ guy

I prefer the Dana 35, high ground clearance, cheap and lightweight. I am in the process of butt welding early 18 spline closed knuckles to a low pinion, welded diff, vacuum disconnect dana 30 , of course modified to use birfields.:nuke:

The 14 bolt is the cheapest/strongest way to go. Mogs are just cool. If I were trying to achieve ground clearance with strength a D60 modified for 40 splines is cool but if I were made of money I might just do a 35 spline 9" modified for full floating hubs. The thing that sucks about Rockwells is that you HAVE to run 44s to clear the gargantuan center section. The cool thing about them is you can build a 6x6 relatively easy, pinion brakes, and nice driveline angles.

just wait toe.. i mean hot boy...

within 4 link design there ARE actually ways of controlling the torque leverage on an axle. unimog or not, all axle links need to be spaced properly on the axle side to get the least amount of torque being sent to either the springs, the arms, or the tires that can inheret axle walk issues..

my suspension will change in 3 different ways, for those who know 4 links and are interested

-vertical distance between the upper and lower axle attachment points will increase to 10.5 inches apart
-im going to make it come closer to squatting under acceleration instead of lifting 1/2" .
-more triangulation of arms, both upper and lowers to control lateral axle movement

you can buy or build new covers for the bottom of the rockwells that give more ground clearance than a 14 bolt,i think about the same as a 60 ;) !!
