okay so a while back I had issues with my rear third in my toyota...It ended up being oil squirting out of the pinion seal. So I pulled the third, replaced the seal and everything else the goes along with it. Then I had RockApe weld it up for me. Put it all back together and went to drive it today and was getting some crazy a$$ noises. Brought it home and pulled the rear fill plug to make sure my oil level was good, and when I did that you could see metal flakes on the fill plug  :cussing: WTF is going on...I pulled the drain plug and a little bit more metal shavings came out....I'm about to give up, I need help please.....Oh and a quick note, I put the rear end up on jacks again and spun the wheels freely and it looks like the pinion spins lop-sided :dontno: is this normal: because I've come to the conclusion that some how the pinion got bent and is just chewin up my gears....and help would be appreciated

could be your pinion flange had a lip which keeps it from tightening down when u try to do the crush sleeve.... could also be you somehow bent the pinion..... :D

yeah well I'm hoping it's simply the pinion flange is not down all the way....but I am already budgeting for some cryo-ed gears from longfield superaxles if it comes down to the pinion toasted...I sadly believe it is the pinion because the flange spun cock-eyed even when I bought the truck, so I know it wasn't me if the pinion is bad

Bummer dustin, sorry to hear that.

yea well shit happens.....I pulled the third apart last night to find out that the pinion is bent  basically, the outer bearing on the pinion was tightened down so tight that it caused friction and then heated up the crush sleeve so bad that it gradually warped the pinion shaft...oh and there was 6..did you hear me say that, 6 shims on that pinion  .....and they were supposedly set by shaffers offroad... seems to me like they just threw in all the shims that came in the master install kit and called it a day...now I in search for a whole new open third with 5.29 gears.....stupid offroad shops....

It is all good, if I were you, I would have someone look over the set-up to make sure everything is good, for the price, you can't go wrong :D

Thats a bummer dude, I feel your pain. My rig is down at Samcos right now getting new gears, locker, bearings the entire works. Just got to get the engine running decently so I can wheel it for a while before the v8 swap

Well sheesh, you dont want any leftover shims when you set up a diff, gotta use em all, you paid for them shims didn't you:bs:

On S.V. diff, I will use all the shims + a few that I have laying around. Mabye if I use some Dana 60 shims it will end up stronger and thus more hardcore. Oh, and S.V. I Cryoed your ring and pinion in my shop freeser for free:wink:

Sam thats not the truth and you know it....nobody uses shims anymore...i saw days of thunder and they said loose was faster...thats why i just slapped mine in and then it just slaps around besides isnt that what makes an axle a full floater???????

god damn right it does. the more slop you got the harder you can flog it. :D we dont need no stinkin shims. who cares about tooth contact pattern! as long as that shit touches somewhere it'll work!

nah sambo had it right....more shims the better....it allows for the pinion to grind on the carrier to provide more grip on the gears so they don't slip as much....limited slip is what they call it....and then if you put in dana 60 shims, it will jam the pinion so hard into the carrier that you will get a full locker.....that's what you call a spool ....:bs: :sure:
