i've been itching to get started in bird hunting. i've been out once or twice, but it's time to get my own gun and start killin'
i need some help deciding on a gun. i want something that is a "jack of all trades", so to speak. something that is just as at home shooting upland game as it is shooting waterfowl. i'm thinking about a gun that's a 12ga. and probably pump-action. don't know about barrel length, i'm thinking 26" would be o.k.??? since this is gonna be my first gun, i want something fairly cheap to get started on.....like $400 or less (but no cheapo BIG 5 crap-guns).
so far, i've searched and came across this. i like this one.

i know there's a few animal-killin' rednecks here, so does anyone have any other ideas, recommendations or helpful info???

I HATE TO SAY IT BUT MAYBE SIERRA VALLEY COULD HELP YOU!!I HAVE AN OLDER REMINGTON 12 GAUGE PUMP THAT WORKS GOOD FOR ME(AND WHEN MY DOG SEES IT, HE IS ALREADY WAITING IN THE TRUCK!!!)

Get an auto, not a pump. When hunting in Nv there's nothing like unloading 5 shots without pumping. In Ca we can only have 3 shells in a gun...Check the pawn shops, and really low ball them. i I offered them 250 when they were asking 400 and got I it. If you want to duck hunt make sure you can shoot at least 3 in shells. Its also nice to be able to change chokes while you're hunting. If you're chuckar hunting a light gun is a huge plus. After you get a gun then you got to get a dog! Hunting without a dog is like wheeling a subaru...not a lab either...thats wheeling a fullsize

Were hunting opening day and we don't have a dog but we still bag quite a few birds, I hunt with a pump action w/ 26" barrel (rather go down to a 24") Personal preference, I use a Mossberg 500 (lighter than a Remington 870), I also have interchangeable chokes, and I use #6 shot for Chukkar/Quail. You're more than welcome to join us on opening day, we hunt in Kings River Canyon (well worth the drive) The more the merrier... and we have never been skunked there...(I would like to upgrade to a Semi-Auto, just gettin lazy) and my dream gun is a Benelli (9- shot semi auto, but at $1,100 +/-, it's kinda out of my price range)
You guys can PM me and I'll let you know where to meet and when we are heading out to bird hunt... We are also lookin for other areas to hunt, that is closer, I've hunted Empire and Gerlach (too many people) but I am sure there's a ton of other places close by....

I have several different guns, as wix said get a automatic. Nothing like a cubby of quail jumping up and unloading 3 rounds in as many seconds into them.

Man you're crazy to give up you're good spots. I wont even take family members to some of my spots. Next thing you know they tell somone who tells somone and all of Nv. finds out. Then you got a to fight for a parking spot.
A spot that I wont be going to anymore is off the Tracy Patrick exit, back by the new wall mart wharehouse. Its all Private, but just act stupid  Went there twice last year never got asked to leave, a buddy went out there and was told to leave so I havent been back and dont plan on going back. Thousands of birds back there.

hmmmmm, auto......that sounds like fun. i'll go look around at the gun shops here in town and see if i like anything.
i have a dog.........just need to get him FULLY trained. he loves to go out and chase birds.....i can't wait till i can get him to actually point and retrieve for me  . oh, and he's not a lab......labs are also like wheeling in a Jeep.....everyone's got one  .

FYI, labs arent the best pointers. They are more like flushers. If yours isnt a pup will be pretty hard to train, however, they do retrieve.

There's is also that loud noise that goes off, somtimes it scares an older dog that has never been around it. I use a Brittany (best brid dogs around in my opinon) He has been professinally trained and comes from some of the best lines in N.Ca. If you have a good dog, hunting is a blast even if there are no birds. Its fun just to watch the dog work. I've also got a lab (awesome duck dog). He's great for finding birds but if he gets to far out and ruins it (flushes the birds)  . I use to get mad at him and beat the piss out of him. And as soon as the temp gets over 55 degrees he's useless... Not his fault he's just not meant to hunt chuckar. But it does get frustrating. Usually I just leave him at home the brittany keeps me pleanty busy.
(just joking about beating the dog)

Brittneys are by far the best dog I've ever hunted behind, thats why I have one. Never hunted him much, but used to watch him out in the field behind my house working the brush caught him pointing a lot when he was young.
My uncles two Britneys, now thats another story. Trained by him and pound for pound the best bird dogs ever. Can go all day long, they point, they dont get too far out and flush the birds, and they always retrieve the birds.

I THINK LABS ARE AN OK.I HAVE TWO GERMAN SHORTHAIRS,THE MALE IS A NATURAL HUNTER,NOT ALOT OF TRAINING NEEDED!!!THE FEMALE IS JUST PLAIN RETARDED!!!FAST TO RETRIEVE AND USELESS FOR ANYTHING ELSE!!!!I WOULD PROBABLY GIVE HER AWAY IF SOMEONE WANTED HER!!!(SINCE SHE WONT LET THE MALE BREED!!!)
I ALWAYS THOUGHT WEIMERANERS WERE TIMID LIKE DALMATIONS???I HAVENT SEEN MANY OF THEM HUNTING.

timid??? definately not. but he's one energetic son-of-a-bitch (no pun intended). i was looking for a shorthair or brittany, but i got a smokin' deal on him so i just had to get him (plus, there's just something about german dogs i like). i paid $350 for him.......the others in his litter went for $1200  (he's just not full silver. his underside is a tan so he's not papered.) his parents were excellent hunters from what the owner showed and told me. this is my first attempt at training a dog for hunting, so it gets a little frustrating at times and i've still got ALOT of work ahead of me......

I know what you mean, I have hunted Gerlach on opening day and Man it's like trying to claim who shot what... and as for Kings river..... there's lots and lots of birds and plenty of area so far... I think if I hit some of the powerline roads on the south end of fernley I can drive the back way into tracy clark... and maybe go undetected ???? like I said anyone is more than welcome to join up.. makes it easier and more fun to hunt... then we can all work together and push the birds back and forth.... I will call my buddy and let him know 'bout Tracy....and I'll run the roads on the back side...
Also good choice on the Benelli, but if I had the $$$ I would definetely go for the Semi Auto 9 shot.....Just gettin lazy and just like Sierra V. said nothin like jumpin on a covey of birds and not being able to shoot fast enuff....

what does everyone recommend for getting some practice??? should i go to a shooting range like Sierra Sage or Capital Gun Club??? or should i just go buy me some clays and a hand thrower at Wally-World and have at it up on Peavine???

I would have left somone behind in order to bring a dog. IMO, #1 tool=gun #2tool=dog, and #3 is a shock collar! You think you covered a lot of ground? Get a good dog and it will multiply the ground you cover by 1000. I would never leave the dog behind, but thats one reason why I go, to watch my dog work.

When I fire of about 10 shells, my dog will head to the truck and lay down under it. After a couple boxes, he comes out and looks around, I think he sees my Brit eye balling clays, then comes out for a while. I have heard "gun shyness" is hard to break, but I think it can be done, may take a while...
Even if I can't break the dog from being shy, he's a great family dog and as you mentioned, a killer watch dog.
