Got my jeep with 33x12.50 BFG Mudders. Liked them alot, so I got 35's. They work great for all around wheelin. Good in the rocks(if new), get it done in the snow and mud (except that little lip around the rim gets all gummed up and leaks air). The tires wear pretty bad on the hwy though, however, I dont see too much of that since Im broke always.

The ranger has Les Schwabb mudders and they are decent for the price, plus free balance and rotations make it a hard deal to beat.

Very possible that you didnt appreciate them after the Krawlers. My buddy and I did almost the entire Rubicon in 2wd. Also we made it out of the Fordyce in front wheel drive only on the Irocks with some winching. The one wierd thing with these tires is that at certain spots on the rocks they will loose the bead or something and just start loosing air like crazy. Not sure if its the bead locks or the tires but it happened on both the Con and Fordyce.

He had the 37" TSL's before and they were great in the rocks/snow/mud.

i have never ran TSLs but i have heard they need lots of wheel spin to "hook up" and get good traction. is that true?

33x12.50 BFG MUD-TERRAIN: SEEMED TO BE A GOOD ALL AROUND TIRE OFF-ROAD FOR ME. SEEMED TO DEVELOP QUITE A FEW SIDEWALL SPLITS AFTER ONLY A FEW RUNS THOUGH.

36X12.50 TSL SX: I HAD A SET OF THESE FOR QUITE A WHILE AND REALLY LIKED THEM. RAN THEM ON 15X8 BEADLOCKS AT ABOUT 5 PSI MOST OF THE TIME. I GROOVED THE CENTER TREAD BLOCKS AND THEY FLEXED BETTER AND SEEMED TO GRAB A BIT MORE. SEEMED TO WORK GOOD FOR MY SET UP ON FORDYCE, RUBICON, AND THE HAMMERS. DROVE THEM ON THE SIDEWALLS A LOT AND THEY HELD UP WELL.

40X13.50 GOODYEAR MTR: I HAVE HAD A SET OF THESE FOR A FEW YEARS NOW AND CAN'T COMPLAIN MUCH WITH THE PERFORMANCE. FLEX WELL AND GRIP DECENTLY ONCE THEY GET WARMED . SIDEWALLS APPEAR TO BE HOLDING UP AND THEY GET DRIVEN ON THE SIDE A GOOD AMOUNT. USUALLY RUN THEM AT 3-5 PSI ON BEADLOCKS WITH NO BEAD-LOSS ISSUES. THEY AREN'T AS STICKY AS THE BFG KRAWLERS BUT I HEARD THAT A RIG ON MTR'S HAS MADE IT FURTHER UP GREATER BRONCO THAN A RIG ON KRAWLERS AND A RIG ON IROKS.

for several years i had yokohama geolander MTs and they were very quiet on the road and were shit tough on the trail. 315 75 16. Then Rick Russell made an offer i couldn't refuse-- take some Goodyear muckymux wheeling and for my trouble, they'd hook me up w/ 5 good years of my choice. Took the 315 MT/Rs--- now in hindsight, should have gone for the 37s. The geolanders held up really well-- the MT/Rs are chewed up really bad w/ less than 1/2 the miles of the yokos.

33" Radial TSL, good street and mild tire. However 33s got me in the most trouble, small enough to suck and big enough to make me think I could make it.

35" BFG AT 2nd worst tire ever! Worthless for everything.

36" Maxxis Buckshots. So-So but cheap. Wear fast and soft compound, lots of shale cuts. Gripped well but wore so fast the tread was worthless in 12K.

35" Super Swamper Trxus MT. Very nice tire. I bought them in 16.5 range E for my Travelall. I only have about 50miles on them almost all off road. But snow/ice/mud/street very nice ride and quiet. I'd recomend them for a mild rig or tow rig in a heartbeat.

265/70R17 LRE Mickey Thompson MTZ for my DD/Tow rig. I have 3K on them now and cannot see any wear, or cuts. Super quiet and very good road manners. The compound is rather hard but for a tow rig thats right on. Some mild mud but no real googey stuff yet. Very happy with these as of right now.

WORST TIRE OF ALL TIME: High Tec Retreading OTR MT. Got 4, blew out the sidewall on 1, they replaced it, then the new one wouldnt hold air. They replaced it blew out another sidewall and the replacement wouldnt hold air. All street driving FYI, most of it under 45mph. Took 5 months for a full refund plus some extra but with all the mounting and ballancing I still came up about $75 short. Not to mention having to dispose of 6 MTs. Retreads are still crap FYI.

Getting 38X12.5R15s TSL Bias on beadlocks Sat, so I'll chime in after I run em a bit.

I've run 35" bfg M/T'S,AT'S AND they're alright for the street, 35"MT/R's pleased with them minus the mud.. currently running Truxus M/T'S and extremely pleased with them just haven't tried them in the snow yet... Also currently running 44X18.5 15's on 15x10 non bead locks on my K5, pleasant buzzsaw sound on the street and relaxing rocking/bouncing on the freeway kinda like a rocking chair..just recommend that you don't drive if you're tired cuz they'll lull you to sleep...but awesome in the snow...and mud...:Big Grin: and in a gravel parking spot....

33x12.5R15 BFGoodrich All Terrains on 15x10 aluminum rims- Quiet and easy to balance, actually worked fairly good on dry rocks since they put down a lot of rubber, but not very good in mud, snow, wet, or sharp rocks.

37x12.5R15 Goodyear MT/Rs of 15x8 aluminum beadlocks- These tires seem to stick fairly good in the rocks and are nice and tall on the 15x8 rims, but they have chunked fairly quickly in the rocks. Go down the road smooth on beadlocks even without balancing.

285/75R16 (33") Goodyear MT/Rs on 16x7 aluminum rims- These tires are a little loud on my Land Cruiser and 4Runner compared to A/Ts, but they seem to balance pretty easy and have worn well on road (where these vehicles are used the most) and seem to work good in the sand and loose rocks. Kind of expensive but you get what you pay for.

285/75R16 (33") Pro Comp M/Ts on 16x7 aluminum rims- These were on my 4Runner when I got them. The previous buyer got them buy 3 get 1 free. I used them a few times offroad, they seemed to work OK and didn't chunk, they are pretty soft and the sidewalls don't seem as tough as the MT/Rs.

35x14.5R15 Pitbull Rockers on 15x10 steel rims- I put these on my friend's Early Bronco to test them, previously he had 35" BFG Muds. The tires are really wide and balloon out and are crowned at street pressures. They have held up REALLY well offroad, no chunking at all. The seem to stick well in the rocks and have worked well in the snow, mud, and sand, but they are loud on the road and are pretty expensive. They took a fair bit of weight to balance, but that is likely due to the hashed rims they were put on.

We need DeadandCo to post up, he has run just about every tire under the sun. :Big Grin:

33" bfgoodrich muds. I loved them, before I discovered Krawlers.

35" Goodyear MTR's on Allied steelies w/beadlocked. They were loud and hard to balance.

37" Krawlers on Walker Evans beadlocks. Very nice. at 17,000 miles on them there done. sidewall tears, chunking and so on. They have worn very well and I have a new set (Thanks to RockApe) in the garage, waiting to take their place.

I'd like to try the Maxxis Trepadors (WTF is it?) after I hear more about how they are doing.

33" dayton timberline M/T's were pretty good, never really had any issues- but never hit snow or mud with em cause they were stolen before winter hit- i must have had 5000 miles on em....

33" baja claws- kick ass- do great in snow and mud, really nice at work on those sharp pointy rocks- i've yet to find a place where i was just sitting there spinning em (excpet rescuing that jeep when i was in a hole cut by some full size dodge that just sloppied it up with his tires- then i had to climb over a 2 foot high root in front and couldnt turn my tires at all for fear of breaking some shit.... but it climbed out after a little convincing....

I have the factory tire on the CTD, and they are the rugged trail T/A's we went up to lake davis this last w/e to get a tree and I had doubts about it's ability in slushy snow and some mud, and a heavy rig, to my suprise I never once came close to getting stuck nor did I slip-n-slide (keep in mind that the roads were forrest service roads with some primative roads branching off them into some soft soft areas), the truck felt stable at all times, (but in my mind i really want a better set of tires.. just unsure of what to get and what'll really work under a heavy truck...maybe a set of TOYO OPEN COUNTRY M/T'S ??

Currently running Maxis mudders on my DD.
They are okay. Road noise is minimal, no vibration, no complaints in the mud or snow. But I think the compound is a little soft. The side walls flexed a lot when I first got them, truck swayed a lot at 60MPH+, I had to air them up to around 60psi to get that to stop. They wear fine but they wear fast. I have slightly less than 15k on them and they are less than half tread. So they should last about 30k, and I guess at $515 for the set, I shouldnt be bitching to much but I think they should last longer than a year. I wouldnt put them on an actual trail rig.

I have Haug mudders on my trail rig.
Out fucking standing in the mud (as long as your going forward, not so good if you have to back up). Good flexy side wall but not very strong. I have torn two side walls on them in the rocks so they will be replaced soon. Probably go with the ole swamper stand-by.

Best tire I have ever owned was a BFG M/T

35X12.50X15 BFG MUD TERRAIN 15X10 STEELIES
I've allways run BFG's. The Mud Terrains have allways hooked up good, and worn well, and I love the road manners. You allways have to watch out for your sidewalls, or they will get sliced by sharp rocks, and they chunk pretty bad though.

35X15.50X15 BAJA CLAWS 15X10 STEELIES
I ran a set of 35"X15.50"X15" Baja Claws on 15X10 steelies, and They were really stiff at first. I tore a valve stem off on Twister, and drove home to Sparks, down Pyramid Hwy at about 50 mph, with no air! I would wheel these with 2lbs of air, and no beadlocks. They eventually broke in nicely, and rode good for the first half of their life, then started feeling like they were square, and would flat spot bad in cold weather. These tires flat hooked up in a straight line, and no matter what you got into, you could allways back out of it. (They work great in reverse). But they would slide sideways off of shit, and slide you down scary sidehills sometimes. I also never feared for my sidewalls like I have to with the BFG's. I took first place in the Misfit Mudbogs with these tires, 89 feet, and then I backed out of the pit!

37X12.50X15 MTR 15X10 STEEL TRAILREADY
These seem more resistant to chunking than the BFG's, ride great at 80mph unbalanced, and hook up well, especially on slickrock. I still worry about the sidewalls allthough I have punished them and they held up.

I'm considering trying a set of TSL bias tires. What model and size is about the same size as the MTR 37's. My gearing wont let me go much taller?

37X14.00R15 SUPER SWAMPER IROK-BIAS 15X10 TRAILREADY
UPDATE: Well mainly due to price, instead of the TSL/SX's, I just bought some 37X14.00R15 Irok's (bias). They are a little shorter than the MT/R 37's, but a little wider, we'll see how they work.

RARECJ8
December 27th, 2006, 10:38 AM
its common in rockracing. the krawlers got the idea from farmers-- they've been adding water, sand, etc, to their tractor front tires for years-- adding weight to the front tires keeps the front down and adds to traction, COG, front/rear weight ratio and the like.

dont use water.. use calcium cloride(so?) that is what we used on the ranch.. it helps alot for traction and it takes some really low temperatures to freeze it. i have never seen any freeze.

Why would you put water in your tires...

I lost a bead with my BFG's crossing the river on fordyce, and after I got it back on the rim, I had no problem, till I hit the dirt road around meadow lake. Every time I would get up to about 25 mph the wheel would start shaking. Luckily I had some plugs in the sidewall, so I pulled the tire, hooked my compressor to it, pulled the plugs, and forced all the water out the sidewall, then re-plugged it. If both tires are filled 2" above the bottom of the rim, how is the balance? What's your top speed?

Does or has anyone used a Mickey Thompson MTZ for any decent rock crawling or off-roading. If so how well did they do? NVScouter I know you said you put a set on your dd/Tow rig, did you ever get a chance to try them on any rocks or tuff terrain? How many miles have you gotten out of them?

Also while on the subject has anyone tried those new Pro Comp Xtreme mud tires?

tires :40x13.5R17 goodyear MTR kevlar dot's
wheel: 17x9.5 raceline beadlocks

so with that said I think they blow goats for quarters. In the rocks they seem to not hook up as well as the bfg km2's I had before that were 37" The sidewalls are weak as shit. In the snow I have to drop them down to 4psi and with my rig being heavy it looks like the tires completely flat. On the street if you don't run them at full pressure the side lugs wear off like you sat and did a burn out the entire time. The only thing they did seem to do really well on is in the ice for some weird reason they grab halfway decent.

Thats why i'm having a hard time finding whats an honest answer from people and pretty much won't listen to shit that a magazine or website like pirate says. I've also seen a lota people who haven't ran a variety think their tire is a the greatest ever cause it wheels better than their buddys rig which totally makes a difference too. But I know my experience of the MTR's vs the KM2s are on the same trails with the same rig and the MTR's were 3" bigger so they shoulda walked all over the KM2s but they don't

I can't vouch for the DOT GY's at all, never ran them. But the sticky's work good, they're comperable to a krawler in every way but size, the 40's really are 40's!

Having said that, i've run:

37in red label krawlers
39in red label krawlers
39in KRT/B's
40in creepy crawlers
40in trepadors
37in trepadors
40in GY MT/R stickys
42in GY MT/R stickys

every tire has it plusses and minuses.

Krawlers run small for there size, and the sidewalls crack at the rubber molding seam, which can tear apart the cap of the tire if snagged properly

the KRT/B's are bad ass. 9 ply's, kevlar, and sticky, probalby the least sticky, sticky tire i've ever ran, but work just fine for me, these are what i plan to stay with for a while.

Creepys were fucking heavy... hard to get broke in, but worked good, and will last forever

trepadors were a great tire, heavy again, only thing i didn't like was the lateral traction, they pushed in uphill off camber turns

GY's stick same as a krawler, sidewalls flex better and don't require as low of air pressure, they worked just fine the 3 times i have used them.

FYI I am not sponsored by any of these tire MFG's, and have either borrowed or paid for all the tires listed above that i have personal experiance with.

NOW, you want a real go fast kick ass tire? the general grabber red letter...

They fucking rock, end of discussion.... for high speed, handling, drifting and flat out bulletproofness. ran V2r with no flats this year, and the tires looked almost new 500+ miles later.

rock crawling? Meh.... I ran them at KOH 10, and finished on them with open diff's the whole 136 mile race. It was a struggle. The largest they come in is a 37, and they're designed as a desert race tire.

Odd's are I will get a set of the DOT red letter's for my new dodge when the time comes. They're a great tow rig tire also.

And I'm NOT Sponsored by them, just really beleive they make a good product.

Goodyear Duratrac's 285/70/17's have been using them for the last few months on the DD/Tow Rig. Tires handle very well, have great traction on dry/wet/icy/snowy roads. They clear out like a great mud tire, and sound better than an all terrain. The wear is excellent (cummins quad cab) tows nicely. so for the $$$ these are it !!! and they ran about $900ish from the tire rack.

love my new MTRs (40") sticky, 1st stickys i have owned, one thing i noticed is that they pick up sand and little pebbles and throw them in the cab, probably because they are sticky, i probably remove 10lbs of sand from the cab after a day on the trail.

they wear quick, but i expected that, climbing stuff i never have before

My IROKS do the same thing. I think it's the siping. The cut opens up and grabs the sand/pebbles and then tosses it right at my face.
