I was thinking about calling this thread hardcore trannies, but I was afraid of the backlash :eek: Anyways, we all know what the hardcore t-cases are, but I am not all that familiar with transmissions. What are the good autos/manuals for rock crawling? Post em up :Big Grin:

Muncies (SM420s and SM465s), T-18s, and NP435s are the kings for manuals because they are short, relatively light, and have deep first gears.

For autos, I think that they all need to be built (low stall convertors, shift kits, valve bodies) to stand up to hardcore horsepower and abuse. TH350s and TH400s work good, 700R4s are OK but I have had some bad luck with them and they are WAY more expensive and complicated than a TH400. C4s and C6s are good to if they are built. Check out B&M, Art Carr, or TCI.

I THINK AUTOMATICS ARENT AS HARDCORE AS STANDARD TRANSMISSIONS!!!!(MAINLY BECAUSE YOU NEED THREE FEET TO DRIVE THEM PROPERLY!!!!)

BULLETPROOF MANUALS:

T-18 -T-19
SM 465 OR IS IT 435.....(CANT REMEMBER!!!)
NV4500
SM420

AUTOS...
TH400(THAT IS ALL!!!)EVEN THOUGH I GOT A TH350!!!
POWER GLIDES ARE TOUGH BUT HAVE A CRAPPY FIRST GEAR RATIO!!!!!

FORD....C6

DODGE TF727

I gotta say Im really happy with my T-18 mated to the dana 300. Great combo that came stock.

WHAT ENGINE AND T-CASE ARE YOU GOING TO BE USING??? CHEVY SHIT= TH400 OR TH350, FORD GARBAGE= C6, DODGE= TF727. WITH A FEW MODS, YOU WOULD PROBABLY BE HAPPY WITH ANY ONE OF THESE. HARDCORE NIGGAZ RUN AUTOS. MANUALS ARE FOR HILLBILLYS. :gapteeth:

A T400, manual reverse valve body w/ compression breaking is hard to beat. Followed by a C6.

But by all means I would take a manual tranny anyday of the week over an auto in a trail rig.

Personally use a built T-400 but was curious why no one has menioned an Allison?

I had an NP435 in my jeep that I beat the ever loving shit out of and it didnt care one bit. It wasnt the smoothest thing, but sure took a beating. Thats all I have to add.

As far as the auto trans,I am not a big fan of the low stall converter. For a crawler I think stock stall or a few hundred over is the ticket. More = a bit too much heat for a rig that is on and off of the stall all day long.

Low stalls = on the brakes all day and if your torque starts at 1500 to 1800rpm, you have a dead spot when you step on the throttle untill the engine gets into the torque.

I GUESS IT DEPENDS ON THE ENGINE YOU ARE RUNNING!!!!MY V6 WITH A STOCK STALL IS JUST ABOUT PERFECT!!!SOME TIMES I THINK IT WOULD BE BETTER TO HAVE A FEW HUNDRED RPM MORE BEFORE IT STALLS FOR BUMPING UP OBSTACLES!!!!

Hey I resemble the 435 remark. I moved out of pennsyltucky so as to not be looked upon as a real redneck hillbilly and it has caught up with me after all of these years.

Run down is right. I had to move though. I didnt have enough guns to keep up with the gangs when I lived off of Wells. ......:rolleyes:

Of course out here I still dont have enough but I have all my teeth so the locals leave me alone. I had to throw a car up on blocks just to pass my CC&Rs.
