Has anyone ever taken apart a cv joint on a front 404 axle. i took apart the axle to replace some broken bearing parts and was unable to disassemble the entire cv joint. seemed simple but no luck. i have never torn my axles down that far. normally just have to pull the axles out of the diff. any way if anyone knows any tricks i need them.

POST PICS!!!!IF IT IS LIKE A TOYOTA CV/BIRFIELD JOINT YOU NEED TO GET THAT PART OFF OF THE INNER AXLE TO TAKE IT APART!!!!THEN YOU CAN SPIN THE CENTER SECTION TO REMOVE THE BALLS AND THEN THE CAGE!!!I HAVENT HAD A MOG AXLE APART SO I AM JUST GUESSING!!!!!:Big Grin:

No, its not like a birfield at all. I have never taken mine apart mil, but I mine in front of me, and can give you some heads up if I know what it is your struggling with. A good option is to either post this in the Mercedes forum on pirate as their is some major mogs guys on there. Post some pics and let me know if I can help...Good luck...

its like a double u joint (double cardon style? maybe). the thing is almost completley disassembled but two of the pieces appear to not come apart but that doesnt make any sense. it looks as if the needle bearing support(center part of one ujoint) needs to be unscrewed like an ox ujoint but there is no apaerant way to do that. there must be some tool or trick i have not heard of. i have a 404 service manual somewhere in my garage but that doesnt mean ill ever be able to find it.

thanks for the suggestions guys.

most of it is taken apart and none of it was a problem until i got to these last two pieces. ill have to take some pics to better explain what im talking about. i have pulled the axles al apart a couple of times but never disassembled the cv part of the axle.

I might have to give that a try, tis the season right?? Have you disassembled a 404 front cv yet?? If so you know what we are talking about, the part that doesnt come apart, but could not have possibly been made as one piece?? Darin will have to get pics, but its fawked. We dont even really need it apart, but at this point we just wanna see how it works!!

No, it cant be pressed out, it looks like one of the needle bearing center pins should unscrew like a CTM joint to clear the ears of the outer part of the cv. It doesnt really need to come apart, but now its pissing me off that it wont come apart.

Mercedes are for those rich bitches!!!:Big Grin:

BS dude....I went with mogs, almost purely because the are that much cheaper. I got mine for 2250 with wheels and they where rebuilt on top of that....I am in my rig 8 grand and that is everything...I am a cheap peace of crap tho, I make everything myself. Pinion conversions, drivelines, all the fun stuff:Big Grin:  :15:

got a cv rebuild kit from expedition imports. appearently the 2 pieces are designed to come apart but nobody we talked to knew exactly how to do it. Ended up replacing all the needle bearings and seals.
