Well our buddy Brian who broke his rig on Fordyce this fall decided that it wasnt worth repairing crappy toy axles so he decided to go way big. He dropped some coin and is going with a 14 bolt rear and dana 60 front. To make things even tougher he went with the Atlas transfer case. His plans are to 4 link it front and rear and move to 44" tires. The axles are geared at 5.38 with lockers.

Going to be disc breaks front and rear. He took off the fenders on the front to make it more narrow. They decided to do a mono-link with panhard bar front and rear like the one he built on the cj5 rear. Cheap, strong, and flexes great. They also shaved the 14bolt last night.

I'll probably get some updated pics tomorrow night as Shawn wants me to come over and help with some finishing touches and some mild wheelin to see what problems arise. Sounds like we may have to drop the tranny and open it up as its making some noises and the hammers trip is weeks away for its maiden voyage.

Ya the primer wasnt the original paint scheme, but while I was out there helping him primer I told him fawk it and leave it. Lets get the damn thing running and then work on making it pretty later. After 10 cans of primer he pretty much agreed.

haven't been to this site in a while.......hey wait there's my rig!!!!
update: SV and Shawn pulled the trany last night--its fawked. Lots of flaky metal in the fluid. This is a TCI built trans with only a few miles around town and a half a fordyce trip on it. I'm looking to get it rebuilt ASAP as we go to the hammers in 2 weeks, so anyone in the reno area that can rebuild (or knows of someone) this trans for a resonable price before next thursday--please let me know. I'd also pick up another th350 with the 27 spline 4wd output if anyone has one in good shape.

Brian we finished up around 2am last night. Probably would of went faster but that damn radiator is a mother fucker to get out. We are going to remount it differently with NO ALLEN HEAD BOLTS! Shawn had the engine and tranny ready to be pulled before I got all the coolers and radiator stuff removed.
Also got your rear seat mounted in along with the the aluminum rear panel. Looks good.
Hope you figure out the tranny asap. The oil looked like glitter:eek: I'll help shawn with getting it all back together when the tranny is ready.

who gives a fuck what Dirty Harry thinks, or anyone else for that matter, so what we cut up a nice fj40, news flash FJ40s are pieces of shit, heavy, underpowered, axles made from aluminum foil. I think it would make a nice mellow trail rig. other than that its a POS in stock form, sorry FJ guys, if you dont agree, then you have not broke enough pinions, birfs or t-cases
great vehicle to use as a building platform, it no Bronco II though:Big Grin:
did this build get removed from Reno 4x4, cant find it, was there a boobie in one of the post or did someone not spell fuck with a "v"

Well we got it all back together today and for the most part it went smoothly. Had to get the right bolt pattern for the torque converter to line up. After we got it all buttoned up we went out and ran it around and did one nice rock line up above the house. Then flexed it out in the pit. Man it sure is a stable when off camber.
Brian your gonna be stoked for the hammers.

I replaced the unit bearing in my pos d44 ( I swore I wouldn't dump any $$$ into an axle I wasn't gonna keep, but not being able to wheel for this long something had to give..) I still have the rockwells, but the rims etc... are hard to come by in this area... so I'll wait until funds are up again and get back on the parts gathering... the front bumper has all the plates welded in, recovery rings welded on, winch mounted and wired, now just waiting on my buddies bender to get fixed to rebuild a new set of sliders and rear bumper, weld up the rear and add new shocks/stabalizer and I'm good to go .... I mentioned running lower bronco when my junk is all done to Mark and he's down for it...(wanna go in from the lockwood side and run it up hill) :Big Grin:

Mr. Hanky lives!!!
new trans is in and works well.
the rig is way more stable than I would have thought, being 7 feet tall.
flexes like a mofo:Big Grin:
motor running well, guessing about 225hp-plenty for me right now.
final specs:
height: 7 feet:eek:
wheelbase: 112.5
trackwidth: 80
belly clearance: 27.5
weight: no idea, I'd guess just over 4000lbs
I'll try and post some pics from the other night when I'm home tomorrow. We put it into the pit sideways and stayed on all fours. steering seems to be almost 45 degrees, turns on a dime especially with front digs:Big Grin:
Only problem is a grinding sound when in 3rd gear low range with the front engaged-- I thought it was the front 2 piece DL, but it doesn't make any noise in high, so maybe the Atlas??? Anyhow, I will stay out of 3rd in low range and hopefully things will be fine for the hammers.
