Pre-Runner Mod. Any Advise?

Ok. Here's the deal. I've been thinking about buying a rig and haven't found one I wanted and really do not want two vehicles. I'de rather for now, have my everyday vehicle be my wheeler as well. I know there is disadvantades to that if I was going to extereme wheelin but...what I'm wanting to do is convert my 2002 Pre-Runner Tacoma into a 4x4. I'm thinking I should switch both axles to have a matching set and then hopefully I can figure out which transfer case with bolt up. Then we can get to the plasma and cut the IFS off and weld up the new axles and all the stuff in front. If anyone can help me in telling me what might work or give me any help at all it would be much appreciated.

They have done this before and they aren't that far from you. They can set you up with everything you need (transfer case, crossmember, spring hangers, etc) for the swap. Do you have a manual or an automatic? Last time I spoke with Jim at Inchworm he was working on an adapter to retain your factory transmission but add dual cases.

The rear axle you have is actually really good, it is the same one as used in the TRD Tacomas. I would add either a driver side drop Diamond Axle (http://www.diamondaxle.com/) or a Dana 44 from a Wagoneer depending on your budget.

What's funny is I called All-Pro, they refered me to Mini Trucks, and those guys refered me to Jim. Jim gave me the prices and helped me out a lot. He said something about a driver side drop or passenger side drop. The passenger side drop was much cheaper. He said it shouldn't matter. He mentioned I might have to re-route my exaust but that is nothing. The adaptor is $700 and the transfer case is gear driven and fits 79-94 toyotas I believe. then I just need to choose to get new front and keep the rear or change both. We talked about puttung toyota axles on it but they are sorta narrow. I might want something a little tougher but I do want to keep it sorta budgetable.

then just run a toy front axle, fawkin' guy!!! they're cheap, stout (once you get rid of the stock birfs), and parts are cheap and plentiful.........plus, an all-toyota drivetrain setup would be tits. maybe a little narrow, but wheelspacers will fix that.

gears are cheap, don't worry about matching axles......if ya got to regear the axles (which, with bigger tires, you'll probably want new gears) it'll cost far less than the bling adapter you're willing to throw $700 down on.

look through some of the ttora forums.......you'll learn a bunch from those guys' buildup threads on converting your truck to 4wd.

I'm not wanting to get real crazy...don't have the budget to have a tow rig so I figured I would just slowly build this? Plus it's sorta different. I understand your point but I think this would be a cool rig when I'm done. You deff. have a point though. And that may be what happens. This won't be started for a few months anyway.

Maybe I'll just go back to an OLD Hobbie. Maybe playing with Lincoln Logs and Hot wheels is what I'm meant to do. Since all my ideas are so wrong! :wink: I mean come on. I'm just a second rate Hooligan trying to build a halfway decent street rig. We don't all make 6 digits bro! Plus don't worry. I change my mind more then a girl so give it 2 days and I'll change my mind. But I do think it would be cool to have something different. Plus being able to fab all this shit would be a learning experience for later. I'm just a lost cause..
