Seems to be a true bolt on upgrade. No permanent mods or cutting or welding needed right? (Linconl lockers need not apply....)
Is this something that can be done at home? Anyone do their own? What is really needed to do a ring and pinion. Why are they so freakin expensive to get done at a shop?

Do you take him the parts or have it all done there?

You need special tools in order to do this correctly. If the backlash, bearing preload, and pinion depth are not set up properly you will likely destroy the gears and/or bearings in short order. Check out www.gearinstalls.com. It is mainly Toyota based but good information none the less.

when i did my axles.. i took the complete front axle(pulled) into him.. i had the gears/locker/bearing sets which i also took in..it cost me $200 and i had to do nothing
i messed up and took my rear to percision CV over on hwy 50.. and he charged $280:eek: and i took in the bare rear axle.. the gears/locker/bearings in(oh they even messed it up and drilled a hole for my E locker on the wrong side and charged me to fix it) and i still pulled it all apart:14:

I used drive line services here in reno for my amc 20. I pulled the axle and brought them the ring and pinion and locker that I wanted. They are expensive.
The front I had samco fab do, better prices, a good guy and was done right.
I vote for samco, if possible try to support him by buying the parts through him. I didnt, but I get a vendor discount from Randys Ring and Pinion so I get all my stuff from them for diffs.

Even that is a great price.
4 wheel parts and (I think) Randys ring and pinion in Cleveland all wanted just north of $500 to do a re-gear locker install on my 14bolt.
which is why I decided to just stay with my 3.73's and lincoln lock it.

Apparently D60's are a real PITA to do, which is why you'll pay $500 for locker/r&P installation. Same price for the 14 bolt I believe. I don't have the time or patience to try mine on my own so I just plan on getting them done by a pro.

If anyone cares, Just rear-ends quoted me $1230 for the labor, seals, bearing, everything. ($800 labor, $430 in the seals/bearings for both axles)
Which is about $200 more then I expected to have to pay, but if Rockape says they are good then I may just go with them. TOR and Shaeffers quote me about the same in labor costs.
And if your wondering, for the price of the axles, lockers, r&P's, install labor, install parts, hubs. We are looking at close to $4000 to get some sweet 1 ton's under your jeep. If you don't believe me, here it all goes.
Front HPD60 minus hubs $700
Hubs for said D60 $120
ARB RD36 for said D60 $700
R&P 5.38 Thick Reverse Cut $150
Rear GM 14B FF $150
Rear ARB RD114 $800
R&P 5.38 thick $200
Install Parts Bearings, seals, etc. $430
Labor For said parts install $800
This is not even considering anything else such as diff covers, brakes, brake lines, prep work such as torching mounts, media-blasting, etc.

Try Randys Ring an Pinion. They have a warehouse in Cali and I usually get all my parts in two days to reno.
