After doing some measurements this is what I found out.....jeep frame 33.5" wide....ford front clip 33.5" wide  direct swap..and since I have everything I have a feeling the jeep is going coilover!!! GNice things is all the brackets and mounts on the ford front clip are bolted on. So all I need to do is grind of the jeep shock buckets and drill and bolt everything up...then at a later date i will get some extended radius arms...

Heres the jeep as it sits now...

Took the ford front end apart last night and did some more measurements. Gonna be a tight fit bt everything should line up nicely. Jeep frame is only 4" wide while the ford frame is 6" so I guess I'll have to weld all the brackets on and gusset them. :Big Grin:

I read about that bronco when they where building it. they put a lot of work into the custom frame and dovetailed the rear...too far for me to pick up besides broko is a dead issue right now needs new motor so im building my jeep instead....:Big Grin:

BIG BLUE
May 1st, 2007, 08:34 PM
so did some measuring and had a few questions....if I move the front axle forward how far is typical? Secondally is it worth going coil over in the front? Right now it looks like i gain 5 inches of lift...but doing a spring over nets me 4 or 5....but how is the travel offroad compared between coils and springs...I like the way Broko flexes in the front and this would be the same setup...

BIG BLUE
May 3rd, 2007, 03:34 PM
So i got these two examples of coil setups...not sure which one to go with...

BIG BLUE
May 9th, 2007, 07:56 AM
Naw just change my name to Big Blue and drop the 89...I am gonna paint the jeep once i get my sliders. I installed a ford power sterring pump last night and redid the track bar so the jeep was centered and not so far to the passeneger side..was like a 1" off. I used the ford pump cause the steering arm points forward rather than backwards like the jeep. Now just need to make some power steering hoses and steering arms and I am done with the front...

Why wont the front flex? jeep too lite for the springs? I am gonna eventually put the 351 in the jeep so that will help...or are you just being a big meany? I got the perches so i know the stock spring s wont give me enough lift so gotta measure it and find out how much of a lifted spring I need...

Well okay so you got a point but it does look tough. ANd i am all about perception....I might switch over to some jeep coils for the front and I will use the wranglers springs in the rear cause the broko springs will probably be to heavy duty and too much of a pain in the ass to setup...the front wasnt bad since the frames were the same width but jeep frames get wider at the rear so it kinda makes it not worth it. Thanks for the input.

ran partts of fordyce and it did pretty good, then got throttle happy on an off-camber rock section and since I cheated and cut the spring pack reatiners off they shifted and i bent the rear springs and shocks....

http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n40/BigBlue89/trails/fordyce/pix061607_19.jpg

and off course the front steering tierod got bent..no shocker there.

So the plan is to go with heims and .250 dom tube for the steering. Build a new leaf pack, build new spring pads that are for 2-2/2" springs rather than 3" and put those clamps back on. Also the front springs were a little stiff. I want to replace those heavy duty ford bronco springs with a set of springs from a tj. the ford springs were from a procomp kit with a 6" lift so I need someone who was a lift kit to please measure there front springs so I can get an idea of how close they are in length. Once these things are fixed I think it will flex even better than it did. Poser shot for flex purposes now....

Definatly needs some softer coils. If you are going to redo the rear why not just link the damn thing? You are skilled enough.

Actually I didnt cut them off to gain flex, I took the front and rear spring packs and combined them into one set and the retainers were rivited in the springs so i had to grind them off. Then in my eagerness to go I forgot to swing by totally offroad and get some....but I remembered pretty quick when that happeened...it has like homer simpson says so well "daoooo":Big Grin: Plus I need to get some bumb stops for the rear and trim some more sheetmetal. I also might link the rear cause I found a guy selling some Rock Crawler Jeep Wrangler TJ 4" lift kit coil springs so I might so go ahead and do the rear.

Sweet, buy some joints and metal and get to work ripping out the crappy leaves! Maybe extend the wheelbase a little more too?

BIG BLUE
June 20th, 2007, 05:01 PM
Defiantly gonna extend it a few inchs...now I am regretting not getting the comp corners...I will probably leave the crappy leaves for now and start building the ford 9" and set it up for the rear coils and four link suspension.been building a shoping list on Ballastic fabs website. Where is a good place to get heim Joints??? Quick calculations I come up with sixteen...not just for the rear but for the front too...maybe eighteen if I redo the way the radius arms mount to the frame.

I BOUGHT ALL THE HEIMS FOR THE LO-BUDGET PIMPIN FROM BALLISTIC...THEIR LOWER LINE HEIMS ARE GOOD QUALITY AND THE PRICE IS DECENT TOO!!!!IIF I AM GOING TO USE 3/4 HEIMS I GET THE 3/4s WITH THE 5/8THS HOLE BECAUSE THEY HAVE MORE MATERIAL AROUND THE BALL.

Most people don't go with heims on anything short of a buggy, I guess they don't have a good track record for reliability and length of life on a street driven rig.

I'm going to be going with Summit machine flex joints on mine, Samco sells'em for $30 a pop http://www.reno4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8923

Summit machines jimmy joints are like a heim on steroids, for more flex then you could ever imagine, check'em out! I'd rockem http://summitmachine.com/index.php?p=customParts&cp=jj

I was watching one of those 4wd shows and they were talking about the jimmy joints and they are very impressive. The jeep gets street driven but isnt a daily driver. So heim joints should work fine. The only thing i dont like about the flex joints is there is no adjusting them for fine tuning...once the tube is cut thats it...I like the idea of being able to tweak my links a little....not sure if I ever would though....hmm decisions decisions...

That's if you weld it together! Most come with a threaded shank (or you weld one on) that like a heim joint you can adjust if need be. If that is your only reason.... :)

there are some coming....big shocker I broke my steering..sad things is I did it in camp. I had a serious DEE DEE DEE moment AND SMACKED RIGHT INTO A ROCK! Okay so the jeep needs some TLC....big question is should i leave the steering box i have on there and move it back and mount it higher...or should i get a box from a jeep comanche which has the same bolt battern but pitman arm faces backwards and then relocate the track bar? Also in the rear I keep wrapping my rear springs and bending the shocks...so I need to see if it makes sense to stay with 2.5 jeep springs or upgrade and make new mounts to go to 3" springs...and if i do get new mounts where should i get them from??? And secondly the jeep will get a new motor this winter...I have a v-6 from a 1989 dodge dakota with about 65000 miles on it, a ax-15 tranny and np231...its a tbi. I was thinking of swapping this in....what do you all think? Or should I just go with some sort of small block combo???

for the rear.. why not build a ladder bar to stop the springs from wraping

BIG BLUE
August 29th, 2007, 02:48 PM
Actually I shouldnt use the term wrapping...the spring plates and ubolts are from the bronco and are for a 3" springs so there is a 1/4 on each side of the spring allowing them the twist out of postion and then the main spring wraps around the lower springs...I did have spring retainers on but the failed.

I plan to go to coils this winter so was think of something easy for the next few months...still got those springs Jeeper89???? What is the common thought on coils vs springs in the rear? If i do go to 3" spring perches I plan to shift the rearend back some more...well I plan to do that if I go with coils....but since I dont have a tow rig I drive my jeep to the trail head so I am really thinking of which had better on roads charataristics while still having off road flex....

We have to get together one weekend to see how they would work. I am basically using stock lift springs with the front and rear pack combined for a little extra lift...not sure how the 4" springs would affect the ride height. Plus i plan to take out the bronco springs in the front and replace them with the 4.5" tj springs i got so the might lower the front even more.....maybe i should bring the front springs with me and we can swap everything in you nice pretty shop and see how it all flexs with your forklift????:Big Grin:

I'm glad your Jeep can only do 45 mph because I wouldn't want to be anywhere near that heep on the freeway. Your fabrication skills would make a redknecks hack job look pimp :Big Grin: What are you doing with a forward facing pitman arm when the axle is in the stock location, either move the axle forward or get the correct box, actually scratch that and give it to me because I want to move my axle forward

And what the $&@# are you doing using 3" spring plates with 2.5" springs and no you don't want to use 4" springs SOA unless you want to look down on truckers  use a set of front Wagoneer springs for the rear axle and cut the coil springs up front to level it out if you have to.

No more hack jobs for you, we are going to start giving out the cow bell award for most broken parts on the trail :smash:

Really close. I just need to get a new breakline and the radiator. I have to put the transfer case in tonight and hookup the drivelines. I had to take the front half of the dakota np231 and mate it with the jeep backhalf since the input shafts were different and the dakota output shaft wasnt splined all the way so I coudnt use the slip yoke eliminator kit I had...so I got me a hybird np231. I have to wire up lights and all that good stuff but it doesnt have to be done right away....hoping to have it all together this week and make a prison run this weekend.

BIG BLUE
October 16th, 2007, 09:45 AM
well add drivelines to the list of needed items...I moved the v6 forward about two inches to try and keep the weight balanced over the front...hence I need a shorter front and longer rear....I will do those tonight and then fab a new mount for the tranny or redrill the stock jeep skidplate and then I just need to install the radiator and clean up some of the wiring...its gets kinda tedious and annoying when you start getting towards the end...mentally your brain jumps into overdrive trying to run down things you need to do, double check or could have forgot to do....:Big Grin: It should last longer than a couple of trail runs this time!!

Well got the drivleines done...had to shorten the fron 3" and lenghten the rear about 2-1/2"...shortening isnt too bad but lengthen is a pain...lucky I had tube laying around that was the right size. Now all that is left is the transmission mount and radiator...and some misc wiring for headlights and taillights but I finally see some light at the end of the tunnel.:Big Grin:

A buddy of mine just dropped of a 6' x 5' sheet of plate to me. Does anyone know if there is anywhere I can find a template that I can print out here at work so I can cut it out with the plasma torch? Then I can mount my guages and fix my front axle and go wheel! Alsi since i am tiring of trcing wiring and plan to just wire my lights thru a switch should I run them thru any sort of relay or just run a hot from the battery to the seitch and then to the lights?

well didnt do much other than get all the wiring finally fixed..jeep runs good a little on the rich side. I think thats due to too much fuel pressure. I plan to relocate the back axle back 6 inchs which means I need to get a fuel cell so I plan to do all that in one shot and then Ill add a fuel pressure regulator and bring the pressure down.
I added some buckets and 5 point harnesses to the back for my kids.

YES, I spoke to Blue about that issue and I'd rather him overkill it than not, He is going to make gussets for the top and bottom that way it takes the stress off that section (it is rolled 1/4") but I told him it's wayyyy too much stress for that and it would break. trupster415
April 17th, 2009, 12:09 AM
i like the pick up idea also but there is one problem with it tho. if your low on fuel and and leaning hard to one side or the other or turning fast it will suck air if not submerged in fuel

BIG BLUE
April 17th, 2009, 06:35 AM
ya, I was thinking the same thing, but one side will always be in the fuel so I thought it would balance out, and that was why I went with the larger fuel filters to hopefully to compensate for momentary situations. Now if im crawling along on my side all bets off. I guess I will find out in real life huh cause you can make anything work on paper.
Also I was thinking about recessing the tank so that it is flush with the sides and I can put a cover across it to keep the fuel line protected better and to clean up the look.

well glad to make yall fell better about yourselfs. This is the first time i have ever used a mig so I really dont know what to do. I probably should hit those with the grinder to make em look nicer but if they hold what the heck does it matter. And the guy responsible for doing the nice welding never showed up so I was either gonna just not finish the rear or deal with ugly welds..I guess its easy to see what I choose!

Well I dont know know where to get super tall jackstands. Not all of us have bling lifts in our shop..or even have a shop for that matter. :frown:Anyways I clean up good once im done and untill then the neighbors dont seem to mind much..and no one lives in the four houses across the street. And as long as it holds I really dont care if I win the show and shine award.

I got a bunch done last night but forgot my camera. Completely pulled the interior out so I can paint it the right way and working on the wiring to clean it up. Gonna paint the cage and installing my 4 point harnesses. Hopefully this weekend me and Raji can get it all finished for the most part. Waiting on some brackets for the front springs. Then I need to lengthen my drive shafts. Hopefully ill get to rebuild the motor before the reno rocks events so i dont smoke the crowd out...

As far as your fuel cell pick ups, Holley used to make a universal multi point pick up. Every once in a while you can find one laying around. Part # 12-951. Here's one listing

Is the axle going farther forward then in the last picture?

BIG BLUE
May 18th, 2009, 10:08 AM
I had it forward, even with the end of the frame but ran into problems with the steering..I need a really short pitman arm. Or i need to figure out a way to mount the steering a little different. If I move the axle forward then the arm is actually at an angle behind the tie rod and I think it will bind. I was looking at the kit from ballastic fab that I may be able to mount the arm on top rather than in front. If not I am gonna make new lower coil mounts that will move the springs forward. Other than my not so pretty welding I am happy with those brackets you did for me.

Was thinking about this...

Get a ram, and an orbital, tap your PS pump and go full hydro. No more steering problems!

BIG BLUE
May 18th, 2009, 11:16 AM
Well i would go full hydro but I still drive this jeep on the streets alot and am not sure how that affects high speed handling? Second is funds...which right now I am in a severe lack of....

On a quick thought...do drag links have to be staright? Or can the incorporate bend in them? I saw some from Procomp or skyjacker and wasnt sure if its a good or bad idea..If it is acceptable then I could move my front axle back to even with the end of the frame..something like this

MR.ROCKAPE
May 18th, 2009, 07:18 PM
ITS OK IF ITS A SHORT DISTANCE.....BUT I THINK BY PRE-BENDING STEERING LINKAGE THAT SPANS A GOOD DISTANCE YOU ARE ASKING FOR TROUBLE!!!!

at least get a flat top knuckle and use a cross over steering arm

Hardcore-CashMoney
May 18th, 2009, 10:28 PM
The factory JK ones are bent, but I would think it depends on how much of a bend you need. Those shocktower/spring mounts are pimp :Big Grin:

BIG BLUE
May 19th, 2009, 08:06 AM
Well I think I might just do what ballastic shows in that pic...that would solve most of the issues. I would only need a slight bend but its about a 30" length...and the towers would be super pimp if I was better at welding, but each day I am getting closer starting to see little c welds and not just big old booger gobs...working on steering mount right now and then make some new lower mounts and then driveshafts and I should be back on the road.

BIG BLUE
May 19th, 2009, 09:23 AM
Is there anywhere local to get this? Or does anyone have any? Looking to swap to heims for my steering..can get a kit minus tube for like 150...or go with the ballastic kit which includes tube for like 260...

Cockape might have some 1.5" .25 wall left, I know he was running low and it ain't cheap. If not, wait for it... TFab should have some...

Well Ill wait for Rockape to chime in..ballastic is selling it for....10.20 a foot:eek:

it is possible that T-fab might have some but since my last project I took to them wasnt in their bling bling dollar category I was regulated to the back of the bus..and I dont know if Derek keeps anything in stock that is smaller than 3" I have seen his Link arms...

Seriously I would have thought that a fab shop with a torchmate table (that he was bragging all about on you tube) might be able to actually use it to cut parts for a paying customer..damn what an idiot I was...lol and now that the twins are here ....I want my rig done before 2010..lol Just messin with you T-fab slackers...

So what size is better for stering? 3/4 or 7/8? Maybe someone could pop here and recomend which kit would be the best...
