I want to either get an atlass or get a 4:1 kit for the np 231. Long term plan is to swap out the ax15 for the aw4 w/aw shift controller and one tons. I already have the tranny, but need the controller and some misc parts for the tranny. Is the atlass worth all that extra dough or should I just get the 4:1 kit?

Don't forget a Stak case, they are a little cheaper than an Atlas. And depends on how much you want to spend ~$2000 for a new case or what ever it costs for a 4-1 Lomax kit.

put a dana 300 behind the aw4.....all it takes is a small spacer mounted between the two IIRC. i'd use the 4:1 only if you're going bigger than 37" tires. my old comanche had the same setup (4.0L, aw4 with an awshifting shifter, stock dana 300, fool-widths, 5.38s and 37s). the crawl ratio was perfect IMO. plus....i could do front digs with the 300 :smoke:

Think I will probably go bigger than 37's. I would also like to use what ever setup I get with my current axles and tires. So the dana 300 wouldnt work with my dana 30, correct?

the dana 300 would work perfect once the dana 30 is in the dumpster :Big Grin:

just seems like a waste of time IMO making a new drivetrain work with your current axles and THEN swap for new axles.......that's two different sets of driveshafts that'll need to be made.

Dont think I have much of a choice, the ax15 is on its last leg. And I cant afford to replace the tranny, t-case and axles. I also just put a bunch of money into my current axles  So I was thinkin i would put the aw4 and aw shift controller with new t-case and just wheel it while I collect axles/parts.

ATLAS IS ALWAYS WORTH THE MONEY,I SNAPPED THREE 231'S WITH NOTHING MORE THAN TOO MUCH TORQUE,YES I HAD LONG ENOUGH SLIP IN MY DRIVE SHAFTS AND NO I WASN'T BOUNCING IT WAS SIMPLY TOO MUCH TORQUE FOR THE TRANSFERCASE WITH 5.89 GEARS AND 42'S.ALSO YOU CAN PUT 1410 YOKES ON THE ATLAS(WITH THE RIGHT ANGLES & PROPER LUBE YOU'LL NEVER BREAK THEM).

What would be the point of swapping a D300 in place of the 231 for the same stock gear reduction? 4:1 kits for the 231 are like $900 from shaefers, far cheaper then the atlas if you do the install yourself, plus you don't have to worry about changing your crossmember or driveshafts to get it to work.

But if you are looking at going bigger then 37's (which is obviously going to scrap that D30) then plan ahead for either a pass or drivers drop axle. And yes don't forget the stak boxes, cheaper then the atlas and they are good boxes.

I bought my R&P's from there. All was well except they use fedEX (more like fagEX) to ship the things.

I won't buy private party off of pirate.

that I agree with... but I did one private purchase (my rockwells) but the guy was legit and military, and I had all the info to up the chain of command if needed, but he turned out to be a cool guy. so that deal was a good one....2 rocks rebuilt, with air tank/compressor,airbags and valves for $2,800 the axles also have front outer disc brakes and a rear pinion...plus 2 hydro rams for the front :Big Grin:

Thanks.
So, what ratio and 2 or 3 speed would work best for what i have planed. Gonna put it behind the aw4 to start with and just run 35's while I collect the one tons and new tires, would like to run at least 39's. Will probably be at least a year before i swap the axles. Gears in the axles will most likely be 5.38

DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU ARE GONNA USE IT FOR......THE THREE SPEED IS AS BIG AS A NP205......THE TWO SPEED IS LARGER THAN A DANA300 AND SLIGHTLY LARGER THAN A ATLAS TWO SPEED.THREE SPEED WOULD BE THE BLING THOUGH!!!!!AND I WOULD GO AS DEEP A RATIO AS YOU CAN....MINE HAS THE 5.44 TO 1 LOW!!!!

Id like to be able to still drive it on the highway. As far as 2 or 3 speed, guess it all depends on the price difference.

I THINK IF YOU BLING OUT AN ATLAS....THEY ARE THE SAME PRICE FOR A THREE SPEED STAK....AND THE STAK HAS THE BIG OUTPUTS AT NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE!!!!
