Hey all, my name is Jimmy. I live just north of Reno in the North Valleys, so there are a lot of good wheelin spots in my "back yard." My primary wheeler and daily driver is a 1990 Jeep Cherokee limited with a 4 inch lift and 31's. The only other things I've done to make it wheel better is remove the rear sway bar, make custom disconnects for the front and trim the fenders a bit. Future plans are to build custom bumpers and rock sliders, lock front and rear diffs, add a winch and eventually an exocage. Most of this is on hold however because I'm am a full time student at UNR and don't have the time/money to complete some of these projects.

One of my favorite places to wheel is moonrocks, however I have never tried anything on any of the hills around there, only the main rocks. I've seen some pics of people doing a canyon that looks pretty gnarly that I want to do, but I don't know where it is. If anyone knows, please let me know. If anyone wants to wheel just let me know, I'm always down.

wow! deja vu! lol looks a lot like your old one. what do you have now? I've heard a lot of people swapping the rear for a 44. I'm not sure. I know I could do it just fine without problem, it's just that it's my daily driver also so I'm not sure If I could find time to do it. Any approximation of how much it would cost to swap both? (i.e. rear to a 44 and front to ???)
Thanks! I love these tires. They are amazing. Just a bit pricy for the size, but it is all worth it.

I've got an 87 samurai right now, its serving Daily duty for my wife right now, but i've got a stock pile of parts for it whenever I get my wife a new Daily.
As far as changing out axles, if you can find a XJ 44 (hard to find) its an easy bolt in swap. you can also swap in a ford8.8 (equal strength to a 44) but its about 2 inches more narrow and you need to weld on spring perches. For the front axle its a little more difficult cause you will need to correctly weld on all the perches for the Coils and the brackets for the control arms, one of which will be right above the diff.
you can find ford8.8's at pick and pull half off days and it will cost like $60 for a complete axle with disc brakes. you can also look for the XJ44 on half off days and it would be the same price but good luck finding one. Other than that most XJ44's are going for about $300-500.

Likely you are talking about twister(in the hills behind spanish springs high school),without a rear locker and some kind of rock protection your rig would really take a beating.Pm me if you want directions to just go check it out!!!!If you do decide to go run it make sure you take another rig with you as that trail has caused more that one wheeler to have to hoof it out because of breakage!!!!not to mention a recent roll...

Not trying to scare ya.....just making sure you know that trail is decieving!!!!
Have fun, ask questions and plan on upgrading to another rear axle before you spend $$$ on your current one!!!!

I'm not worried about welding on the axle or anything of the sort. I'm very capable of doing all that correctly and I have all the equipment to do it as I work in a machine shop. Although, I think I would rather go with an XJ44 just because it is still jeep ya know? But is there a serious need to do a swap? Or is it just sort of a luxury to have a little stronger axles? Also, if I do need to do a swap, should I even worry about locking my current axles at all?
As far as that trail, rockape, it doesn't really scare me... too much lol. I would definitely not go up there without someone who has done it b4 and a couple serious 4X4s just in case.

You either have a Dana35 rear or a Chrysler8.25 (23 spline) both are about equal strength wise but the 8.25 is a little better, either one will stand up to about 31's open but if you lock it you will break shafts. There are always those people out there that have never broken one but there are plenty more that have broken more than one. the 44 is good upto about 35's locked, same with the ford 8.8

HOLY SH1T!!! that first picture is insane. ok so yeah I'm definitely not taking my jeep up that any time soon lol. I could do all the others (from what I can tell), but if I came to the point where that first pic is taken I would definitely be turning around. Not only is the jeep not capable of it without gettin seriously beat up, but I don't have quite the driving skill for that; at least I don't think I do yet.
My blazer could probably do it (lifted '72 chevy blazer with 33's) but I still wouldn't want to beat it up. what other trails are out here that are good?
does anyone know what trail those links I posted are of?

87-89 Cherokee 4.0 with the towing package. look for the hitch on the back and then look under for the axle, personally i check every cherokee that i see at the JY even though i dont have an XJ anymore i will still snag them if i can find them.

PIC LOCATION IS UNKNOWN........MUST BE CLOSER TO CALIF,ONLY BECAUSE HOW GREEN THE PLANTS ARE???OR MAYBE TAKEN RIGHT AFTER WINTER.
THE OBSTACLE YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT IS THE FIRST ONE!!!!THERE IS A BYPASS BUT YOU WILL STILL NEED SOME ADDITIONAL ITEMS TO MAKE IT THOUGH!!!!

Most of the trail is pretty easy but there is a decent waterfall section too.
