Hey, I was cruzin around on reno4x4.com and came across a link to this cool site and thought i would register here as well. Right now i'm in the process of building a 82 k5... just this past summer i put the d60/14b in it along with a custom leaf suspension, it has a built 406 in it that will be getting propane over the winter months, also lookin at throwing in a doubler here pretty soon.. along with a custom cage and hidden winch bumpers.. the tires on it rite now are 40" iroks, but looking at going with either 44" boggers or 47" ltb's... but dont know yet.. anyways, i just wanted stop in and say hey, and intorduce myself and my rig...here are some pics:

Yeah are all upbeat over here cause there are no censor nazis and we can say what we want and act like we want....good looking rig...I had a foolsize bronco for a few years but all the abuse on the body and tired of breaking parts because of the weight I traded down to a jeep....good luck and what kinda trails you planning to run? If anything like twister or bronco you better start working on some body armor.

i dont know anything about twister, but once i get the feel for the taller rig i will push it to its limits.. i do have some plans for protecting the sheet metal as much as possible, but body damage is expected...so i guess i cant be worried about it when it happens..

With a foolsize and the tight trails that exist around here dont worry about body damage just take lots of pics now and forget about it....cause twister and bronco and bud will defianitly put war scars on your rig and if you plan to wheel it hard then you really need to think about bringing the center of gravity down and sawzall the fenders to make room for the tires...

Just thought i would give a lil update on whats going on with my k5. I just traded my 40" iroks for a set of decent 44" tsl's. also, i have a 241 doubler going throu the works right now and next will be driveshafts, and this thing will finially move under its own power again.. which will be pretty exciting, anyways, here are some pics of the tires, and i will get some more of the doubler when i go back to my parents house.

thanks guys, i;m hoping to get the front part of the 241 doubler all done this weekend along with mounting all the tires, then its just driveshafts, one powersteering line, hydro-assist, and bleeding the brakes, then it will be ready to move again.. I have to take it back over to my buddies house, who has the car lift, so i can fix my front suspension (the crappy shackle angle), and cut the purches and re-weld them to get the desired angle for the d-shaft.. then its on to fabbing up a serious role cage with buckets and harnesses, bumpers, and sliders.. it just never stops..lol here are a couple more pics i took today with the tire sitting next to my truck..

i plan to take a lot of sheet metal outta of the fenders following these templates i found on ck5.com

http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w69/vantheman44/frontfenderdiagram.jpg

http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w69/vantheman44/rearfender.jpg

and here is what that truck looks like w/ a 4" lift and 38" sx's, just to give you a reference of the overall look of the cut i'm after..
http://coloradok5.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21011&stc=1&thumb=1&d=1145068991

Anyways, I drew them all up in autocadd, so now all i have to do is plot them in 1:1 and lay them over the body, tape then cut.. hopefully they will turn out ok.. and it should give plenty of clearence.

As for me not posting up much here, is b/c i'm more of a reader and try to educate my self off of others knowledge. This rig i'm building is the first true offroad rig i've ever built.. i've wheeled with my buddies truck that was on 35's, and had a good ol' time, and now i just am trying to learn as i go and make the most out of this sport and my rig. I would like to crawl w/ the truck, even thou it is high, but i also wanna just be able to do almost anything in it.. even cruise it to school every once in a while (even thou, that is now the last priority w/ the truck). Its always been my dream to build a capable rig that had 44's. Like i said its all a learning experience and i'm going to enjoy the crap outta it. With the knowledge i learn from hands on and throu webwheeling, i'm sure my rig will have my evolutions throu out its life. And that is why I try to stop by hear almost everyday to check out whats going on. There are lots of knowledgeable people on here, and many other boards, and it is awesome for me b/c i get to act like a sponge and soak up all the info i can get. Also, once i get my first check, i'm going to pay for the membership here so i can search and get some more tech that i cant see right now.. but i wont leave, i just keep quite and learn from others, that is all..

yea, they were kind of a pain to figure out since some measurements i had to go get off the truck and relate to the pics, which sometimes doesnt always match up, so i had to improvise.. anyways, the drawings i have in autocad dont have all the lines, just an out line for me to follow. Hopefully it turns out ok.. Depending on how the 44's fit, i might change the way i cut them a lil bit. I plan on moving my front axle another inch forward to help with keeping the tires out of the firewall, which means removing more material out of the front part of the fender, and less out of the bottom rear like in the diagrams i posted.. either way, i gotta cut and i hopefully it still looks like a chevy when i'm done..lol

did you break out the sawzall today:Big Grin:

no, not yet, i think i going to use a cut off wheel or something similar, it might acutally be about a month or so since I just started a new job in reno, so my time coming home will be limited. However, I will probably trim it all up when I make all the final adjustments (suspension, steering, etc), along with installing a driveshaft within a month, hopefully.
I'm going to build a cage for it, and that will happen shortly after i get it moving again. THen i will put in the front driveshaft. There is no way i will take this truck 4wheeling with out a cage and some harnesses. Especially if i have friends riding with me. I'm really contemplating on lowering the truck just a bit in the rear, too. That might add a little more sense of security for me and the passengers. I'll keep you guys updated for sure.
