Got a question....just started getting death wobble. I changed from 6" Bronco coil springs to a 4.5" lighter tj coil spring. Did nothing else but now I have serious death wobble around 40-45....Are the new springs the cause? Any other ideas? I am gonna get new track bar bushings as those seem a little wore out...but they are the same as before the spring swamp
Curent setup is hp dana44 from a late 78 ford truck, ford 8.8 rear...38"x15" boggers...4.88 gears locked front and rear with detroits...

I had pretty bad sporadic death wobble in my jeep (even before the cattle guard)...once i checked it out i didn't find anything wrong except for a busted motor mount, shitty barings and a front and rear axle on its last leg...so maybe one of those things?? but urs seems to happen more frequently and right after the coil swap, so maybe thats ur OBVIOUS problem:Big Grin:

DEATH WOBBLE IS USUALLY KEPT GOING BY LOOSE COMPONETS.....STEERING BOX WITH TOO MUCH FREE PLAY IS A BIG ONE!!!
NOW WHAT GETS IT GOING... USUALLY IS CRAPPY SHOCKS,COILS OR TIRES EITHER OUT OF ROUND AND/OR MAJOR BALANCE PROBLEM!!!
WHEN IT DOES IT ARE THE TIRES GOING SIDE TO SIDE OR UP AND DOWN???

how much did your ride height change? Change in the ride height would affect your steering, track bar, and caster angles.
I know yours is not stock but Alignment is a big factor too.

i had stiff ass 6" springs and now they are softer 4.5...so maybe angles are changed. Tires seem to go side to side...steering box is the same as before. If I went with a ram asssit setup would that help? Or a steering stabilizer?

both of those are band-aids but do help!!!!full hydro doesnt have DW issues....but I would be afraid of driving it much over 25 mph!!!

VERY LITTLE!!!IF YOU CAN ROCK THE STEERING WHEEL MUCH MORE THAN A 1/2 TO 3/4 OF AN INCH WITHOUT THE TIRES EVEN TRYING TO MOVE....ITS TOO LOOSE!!!THAT WAS THE EXACT PROBLEM WITH THE GREEN YJ....ADJUSTED SECTOR SHAFT PLAY....AND ITS GOOD TO GO!!!

Track bar can be a major cause, and steering as stated.

How do I adjust the sector shaft in my steering box? I get about 3-4" of rock in my steering wheel! I rarely drive the thing fast on teh street so I had never gotten around to fawking with it.

ON TOP OF THE SEERING BOX THERE IS A NUT...11/16THS I THINK...THERE IS A BOLT IN THE MIDDLE WITH EITHER A FLAT FOR A FLAT HEAD SCREW DRIVER OR A HEX FOR A ALLEN WRENCH....LOOSEN THE NUT AND START TO TURN THE BOLT CLOCKWISE,ROCK THE STEERING WHEEL AND NOTICE THAT THE FREE PLAY IS STARTING TO GO AWAY....DO THAT UNTIL IT IS ALMOST GONE!!!!bUT NOT COMPLETELY GONE,IT IS EASY TO MAKE THEM TOO TIGHT AND THAT WILL DESTROY THE STEERING BOX PRETTY QUICKLY.....BETTER TO ERROR ON THE LOOSE SIDE.......HOLD BOLT AND RETIGHTEN LOCK NUT....TEST DRIVE TO MAKE SURE THE BOX IS NOT BINDING...IF IT IS IT IS TOO TIGHT...READJUST!!!

If not the driveshaft angle could have been changed. Are you talking about a Bronco or a B2?You may need to shim your carrier bearing(if you have one?)oh yeah and BOGGERSjust a thought:wink:

Its a jeep with bronco running gear. Got new bushings for the tie rod. Have a leaking fuel line so need to address that before I can test drive it. Tightened the box up last night just a pinch. There really wasnt much play. Think my drag link angle may be not in close enough alingment with the tie rod. Oh well It wasnt built to be a daily driver.

death wobble all gone. got new polyurathene bushings for the track bar and tightened everything up extra good. Now i just have to pull the fuel pump and clean the screen cause it acts like its clogged again...and add a water temp gauge...already ahve one so I should have everything reay for a shakedown run sat. Thanks for the input everyone. See good things do come from this site other than bs sessions!!!
