Are all the boxes tapped and drilled in the same location? if you go to ram asssit do you have to increase your pump?

Yes I do but I still drive the jeep alot locally and sometimes for trips to moonrocks...since i was a kuncklehead and bent LD fender i dont see him loaning that to me ever again....so thats why i was steering away from full hydro...
And not much more expensive.

And yeah a d44 is another reason to hold back from going full hydro cuase i may stepup to a 60 someday..although those chromo axles have helped out a lot.

There I moved it happy. What I am after is a thread that people can post their ideas for hydro, their expeirences or places to buy and get parts for a build your own.

I've done both Toy and Saginaw boxes, and they were similar. Depends on which version of the sag box your running, and where your room is to run your ports.
Doing a pump mod isn't necessarily needed, but helps, particularly the flow mod. Pressure wise, your gaining sq. in. in your cylinder. So if your running a 1.5" cyl @ 1000 psi your gaining 1750 lbs of steering force in one direction, 1400 in the other.
With the hydro assist, I did get in situations where I couldn't steer, but it was because of the cross over steering, not the assist. That's why I'm now going full hydro.

That doesnt mean he cant swap it onto a dana 60 down the road. Thats what B2krawler will be doing. He is going full hydro single ended ram on the dana 44 until he finishes the front 609, then he will just remount it to the 609 when done.
Im taking his old steering box and hydro assist to run on my 60 when he gets his new bling from PSC. I do need to look for a new pump though.

yeah I was thinking of going the full hydro route but I just drive it too much on the road..and not sure if I would ever upgrade this jeep to a 60 cause the way its setup its all based on the ford radius arm dana44 so if I was to start over i would do it with a new jeep. Im gonna check with the local hydraulic place and see what they have in stock. They mad me my power steerings lines and were like 10 bucks a piece...maybe they have the ram too...then I can drill and tap it this weekend.

Truth. We had to disconnect the ram on one rig half way to Loon because his rig had so much under/over steer he could barely keep it out of the ditch. Home brewing this kind of mod needs some research.
I got my PS conversion from PSC. It's actually for a Jeep but seems to be working okay on my 40. It came with a ram that is matched to the pump and gear box. I haven't hooked up the ram yet because there is no need with 36" tires.
If you go with big enough tires to need a ram assist on a D44 you may run into other issues.

Theres times with my 35's I wish I had assist.
And my buddy runs a dana 44 with 39.50's and hydro and have yet to seen it break in the past 3 years. However, the hammers are two weeks away:eek:

All I was really saying is do your homework and get a ram that your PS pump can drive fast enough to keep up with the gear box. The PSC pump is modified to have a higher output volume than stock. The gear box is already tapped. It comes with most the hoses and fittings you need as well as the Hiem joints and tabs. And the ram. All sized to work together. Since I am pretty much a moron I decided to go with their design rather than try to cook something up on my own. Besides I priced all that stuff out and it came to more than the kit. And I would still have to tap the gear box.
Redneck is another company that sells kits, I have heard good things about them.

I've read about lots of people doing the westtexasoffroad.com pump mods, and had great results. They said before they couldn't turn their assist unless they were around 1100-1300 rpms, and then with the mods, they could idle and turn from lock-to-lock with no problems
Here are a couple links i have bookmarked, they are for chevy pumps and boxes, but i'm sure all the info is realitive.

Also if you're not to fond of tapping the box, they have alternitives. This is a JKW new front cap,
http://coloradok5.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=38411&stc=1&thumb=1&d=1169259945
and then you just tap the top cap, like this:
http://coloradok5.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=30873&stc=1&thumb=1&d=1158697114
and that way you dont have to tear apart the whole box to clean out shavings. This is the route i'm going to take, and i believe it keeps the lines out of the way of the tires better also.

I got my ram from an off-road shop in South Lake. Best price at the time, kit's clean.
do not tap the alluminum cap. Take the gearox 100% a part and tap into the steel. Mad write ups on pirate.

Just finished the install. It comes with Ram, 2 hoses, fittings for the ram, and fittings for the box, G8 bolts/locknets, and weld on tabs. Or 100% you need. I'm doing a write up of my rig in the fab section. Pics are going to be there.

i just got my hydro assist kit in today, its the 1.5 bore w/ 8" stroke. I already decided to go with the tapped caps. I have read the threads on pirate, and have talked to many people who have tapped the caps, and they have been running the tapped caps for over a year now, w/ many trips under their belts and have had no problems to date. Anyways, a lil pic whorin' to show off what i received today. Now all i need to do, is find a weekend away from work to get this and the d-shafts done.

now would a 2" ram still do that if you have more pump pressure going to it on an assist set up?

Volume is more important in this case. The pump needs to supply enough volume to maintain the pressure in the ram, the larger the ram the more volume you need to keep to pressure up.
Force is related to the ram cylinder diameter and the pump pressure. The larger the diameter the more force for a given pressure.
