View Full Version : Stuan Internal Beadlocks vs Beadlock wheels

I'm running my TSL's at 12# or less they flex great at that pressure but by the end of a day sometimes they are down to 0#. You can hear them bleed air a little at a time all day long. I know someday I will roll one off the rim in a bad spot. I'm thinking I should do something before that happens.
So I was just wondering what the board thinks about the Stuan vs External Bead locks. At $175 each they are a little cheaper than what I've been seeing for beadlock wheels. And mechanically it seems they would work better.
What about weld-ons for my existing wheels? Anybody use them?

Weld on's for steelies typically work out to be the cheapest, but it is still only a single sided beadlock. The stauns are a double beadlock. When I get the $$$ I will be running the stauns simply because I am running blinging alloy wheels and can't get the weld on beadlocks. I don't know how much of a PITA the stauns are to get setup and running (drill a second hole into the wheel) but I know everyone just LOVES torquing all those bolts down :)

Check with LD He was stauns on his rig. He has two installed so he can let you know about the ease or difficulty of the installation. I plan to go with stauns.

to be honest i haven't gotton mine on the trail as yet, but just the mechanics of the Staun Beadlocks makes so much more sence to me that i couldn't even consider a bolt on. yes you will have to drill a second hole for the valvestem, but the staun inflates to 50 psi to lock on both beads securly from the inside. and the best part of it is it's street legal, even in the peoples republic of kaliphonya.

im on my second set of weld on beadlocks.. for me they work great at very low pressure. stauns would be cool, but i hate drilling a hole into a rim. when i first looked into stauns they were uber expensive, but the price is getting lower. if i had a nice set of wheels i wanted to keep, i would lookinto the stauns and get a weld on rock ring.

You'll weld a big ass metal ring on a wheel but you don't like the idea of drilling a 1/4" hole in it???

yea.. with the welded ring on the outside, i can still mount a tire like they are supposed to be and it will hold air and work right . but if i drill a hole. i have to find a way to pulg it so it will still hold air.

I would think if you can weld on the bead locks you could weld a small hole closed.

THE STAUNS ARE SWEET.....BUT THEY DONT LOOK COOL!!!
YOU CANT BE A FULL AWN WHEELER WITHOUT REAL BEADLOCKS ON THE OUTER RING OF YOUR RIG CAN YA???
THEY MAKE SENSE....THOUGH I DONT KNOW ANYBODY WITH STAUNS!!!!(LD DOESNT COUNT....AS HIS RIG IS GONNA ALWAYS BE BROKEN WITH TOY AXLES AND 42s!!!!:mullet: )

GOOD THING, i was bout to slap ya.:fight: when i move my valvestems inboard, not only do i need to drill a new hole, but i use a metal valvestem turned inward to plug the ariganal hole.
here's one of those metal rings welded on my wheel, and it too is street legal

How do you plug the valve stem? If you leave the schrader valve in it would let the air out.

no, it won't. i like the metal valve stems becouse all you see is a small chrome bump in the wheel thats rounded, and hard to damage with rock. the schrader needs to be pushed down to open the seal, and the air preasure used in the tire is not enouph to do that. for added pleasure i also screw on a cap.

I think I'm going to do it.
I'll just have to find another set of used tires instead of getting new ones.
:39: I wonder what Pirate has. I might even find the Stuans used over there.

What shop in town sets up Stauns? I've got them on my truck (mostly as a JIC) and after my last air down one of my tires won't let air in or out. Not sure if any other Staun users have run into this. I assume it's the Staun tube bag or tube blocking the valve.

The only rig I've ever wheeled with that had Stuans had this happen. The bag slipped and partially blocked the tire air channel. I guess you need to make sure the bag is at the right pressure every time you air down.
I was wondering about shops too. I don't have the cajones to dismount/mount a 36" TSL in my garage.

HAVE YOU TRIED AIRING UP THE STAUN,AND THEN TRYING IT???OR AIRING ALL THE WAY OUT???
I DONT KNOW OF ANYBODY THAT WILL MESS WITH THEM...YOU NEED A 4WD SHOP WITH A TIRE MACHINE....IF YOU CAN FIND THAT IM SURE THEY HAVE DELT WITH THAT PROBLEM....TOTALLY OFF-ROAD???OR MAYBE THEY KNOW OF SOMEONE NOT SCARED TO DO IT.....

Letting all the air out of the tube worked. Let the air out, aired up the tire, aired back up the tube and now all is well! Thanks RockApe.

Did you try to air down the tire after you aired the Stuan back up?
It makes sense that if you deflated it the pressure would be off the air tube, but wouldn't it just get pinched again when you re-inflate the Stuan?

Yes I did. I thought the same thing as you.. didn't think the valve was going to work after the tube was re pressurized, but it did.

I called TOR today. They sell and install the bead locks.
I also ask about dynamic balancing, they use the powder stuff. I was wondering about using airsoft pellets with the Stuan Beadlocks.
At any rate they told me the pellets wear tires out from the inside?
I know I want to use something but I've not heard good things about the powder on rigs that get aired down a lot.

the Innerairlock looks like the same thing but made here in the states. COOL. what I can say about the staun is they are a pain in the ass to install, and DON'T PINCH THE TUBE :pissed2:
I'm going to try to install my Quick Air quick deflater valve stems with them. I'll have to modify them just a bit. we'll see.
