View Full Version : Synthetic VS. wire winch rope

I have questions.

1) Which brand? The only one I know of is Amsteel.

2) What size? The winch has 5/16 wire rope now, my understanding is the syn ropes are stronger for the same diameter. Should I size it down to match strength?

3) How much? If I size down can I spool up more rope? Or would it be better to go with the same size and get more strength.

4) How much weight will I lose? 150' of 5/16 is dam heavy.

I was surprised that the Amsteel site didn't have much tech info on it.

stay with the same size if you go synthetic--it is stronger, but doesn't have the abraision resistance of steel. I just went with 100' of 3/8 on a 8k milemarker, and it pretty much fills the spool.

I find the Samson site pretty informative:

http://www.samsonrope.com/index.cfm?ind=1&app=1&rope=192&inst=1

For more technical line info try searching on more generic product names like Dyneema or Vectran (Liquid Crystal Polymer). Between these two products, Dyneema is lighter and stronger, and Vectran is more heat resistant. Technora (an aramid) is old-school, but does have some favorable properties, especially the somewhat lower price...

There are plently of places selling the rope, not all targeting the winch line crowd...

Go with 3/8 it is more durable, and you can always have an extension handy if you need more line.

Im running the 3/8 amsteel. Was able to get about 20ft more on my warn 8000. Stronger yes, abbrasive resistant no, safer yes.

Check out www.masterpull.com It's a bit spendy, has an outer cover for UV and abrasion resistance, and is the best stuff on the market.

RETZ1 on reno4x4 was making the lines for some time-- he had a large spool of the blue stuff and would make custom lengths for the winch drum and make winch extenders-- i got a 150' for the trusty old warn 8274-- it barely fits-- and two extensions-- one 25' the other 50'.

all thimbles, swivel hooks (to unload twisting of the line) , etc are available at high desert supply.

What diameter did you put on the 8274? I have the same winch.

3/8 or 5/8-- i do not recall-- will need to go out tonight and look. the stuff really works well-- just do not let it grind against a sharp object. Some claim one must use a hawse style fairlead and to an extent this is true-- a hard side pull using a roller fairlead might cut the line. I have used the roller set up and winched (others out) many times w/ no ill effect. Just plan the pull to avoid hard side pulls. Couple years back was helping KingBling on a vehicle recovery on peavine and his synth line snapped-- and just as advertised, it simply fell to the ground. They are UV resistant, will not mold, will float and is an all-around fine upgrade-- also, if ur rig is weight conscious, the synth line will offer huge weight savings.

I want to put my rig on a diet.

I had the bumper off last week. My son helped me get it off but he was out of town when I wanted to re-mount it. I had to call a friend to come over and give me a hand. I've pulled the winch/bumper off and replaced it before by my self but it felt like a disk was going to fly out of my spine and across the garage.

those bumper assemblies are heavy! on the heep, i used a chain hoist secured to garage rafters. for the massive bumper on my daily driver, i used an engine hoist-- especially helpful since the bumper alone was effing heavy plus add a warn M12000.

taken last year near lunar lake, nv-- between tonopuke and ely.

Just as a side note, High Desert Supply has changed names to Esco Supply, they are still in the same location though and still have great service.
