Now I'm wondering how hard it would be to go with a link/coil suspension on the 40.

Can I do it in my garage?

How big a commitment will it be in terms of dollars?

See cowchips build on pirate :mullet:

Or check mine, its my 1st time doing it. Got the dom from Rockape forget how much it was. Like $10 a foot??? for links check balistic, poly performance or rubicon express. I think total parts you can keep it under 500. I just did a lot of searching and reading on pirate, and you got lots of help here. GO FOR IT!!! you know you want too.

FIGURE ABOUT $1800 PER END IF YOU USE AIR SHOCKS THAT RUN ABOUT $500 PER PAIR....TUBE,PRE-FABBED BRACKETS,HEIMS,BUNGS,SHOCK MOUNTS...

AND AS LONG AS YOU CAN WORK A TAPE MEASURE AND TACK WELD AND CYCLE IN YOUR GARAGE...THEN IT IS FOR SURE POSSIBLE!!!!

I AM GOING TO DO THE FRONT OF MY TWO SEAT BUGGY TOMORROW!!!!I AM PLANNING TO GET AT LEAST THE LOWER LINKS AND SINGLE UPPER,TACKED IN...ALONG WITH SOME ADDED WHEELBASE!!!:Big Grin:

THE REAR!!!!FOR ONE IT IS EASIER SINCE THERE IS NO STEERING TO WORRY ABOUT!!!PLUS THE LEAFS WILL STILL KEEP THE STABILITY OF SIDE HILLING THAT ALOT OF FULLY LINKED RIGS CAN STRUGGLE WITH!!!

Right now I stuff the tires fully into the fender wells, the only way I could get more flex is if I cut them and box them out. I'd hate to lose more room out of the bed.

ILL AGREE CERTAIN MODS BECOME A VICIOUS CIRCLE OF ALL THE OTHER MODS THAT GO WITH IT!!!REAR LINKS ALLOW THE AXLE TO MORE EASILY FOLLOW THE TERRAIN.....AND ELIMINATE AXLE WRAP...THAT IN TURN MAKES YOUR RIG GO UP STEEPER STUFF!!!!BUT THEN IF YOU ARE CARB'D....THAT WILL KEEP YOU FROM THE REALLY STEEP STUFF!!!!

The track bar I got from Proffittis seems to be taking care of axle wrap.

Not much point in injecting a 2F, so I'd be into an engine swap. I'm a cheap bastid and would have a tough time pulling a running engine. Plus I like how simple that engine is. I suck at mechanics so simple is good.

No it started when I accepted an invitation to ride along on Fordyce. When I got home I started throwing money at the 40 like I had it. Linking the rear would be one of the cheaper mods, unless it dominoes into an engine swap.

$775 for the link kit with hiems
$175 for the complete spring bucket system
$950

I like the stuff I've gotten from Proffittis.

Sweet......the prices went down. I almost bought it a year ago and was in contact with them and they couldn't make it for a couple of months and by then I was going a different direction (namely 1-ton axles)

They do kits for other axles too. "Call for prices."

So $1300 will get you your brackets, links, and heims;
Then you need airshocks or coilovers, springs and tenders- so add another $1000+ per axle.
Then maybe new drivelines-$250to $800 depending on how bomber you go and where you get em.
Then you might as well put in some bling air bumps at $150 to $225 a piece
Add on a couple of hundred is misc unplanned expenses (limit straps, grade 8 hardware, shock hoops, etc.)
Basically plan on spending almost double what you think, as these projects will always snowball into something bigger--plus do you want to spend all that money to keep the stock LC axles??? those coarse spline pinions really don't like the skinny pedal at all. Get a 14bolt or dana 70 for cheap, and have some piece of mind.... Or spend the 6k on the blingbling hi-9 with monster 40 spline mosers like B2s and be done with it.

I always double what I expect to spend on any FJ40 project.

If I change axels it will be for portals.
