According to the owners manual for my 98 LC I should be using High Octane fuel.

I've been using regular and haven't seen any difference in mileage or performance.

Before I made the switch I tried to figure out a little about octane ratings.

Tell me if I have this right;
Higher octane gas resist pre-detonation in high compression engines and stops pinging.

So if I don't get pinging with regular I should be okay right?

OCTANE RATING IS THE FUELS BURN RATE...HIGH MEANS IT BURN SLOWER AND RESISTS DETONATION...MOST MODERN CARS WILL ADJUST TIMING TO COMPENSATE FOR A DETONATION THAT YOULL PROBABLY NEVER HEAR!!!!I USUALLY TELL CUSTOMERS TO RUN WHAT THE OWNERS MANUAL SUGGESTS....BUT THAT IS TO COVER MY BUTT IN A CASE IF THEY CAME IN WITH A HOLE IN THE PISTON FROM DETONATION!!!

IT KINDA DEPENDS IF THE VEHICLE NEEDS IT.....I HAVE A FEW CARS THAT WILL BARELY RUN ON THE CAT-PEE THEY CALL PREMIUM GAS!!!!BUT MY DAILY DRIVER CIVIC HAS OVER 10:1 COMPRESSION AND RUNS FINE ON 87....

AND HOT DAY AND A LONG GRADE MAY TELL YOU IF YOU REALLY NEED TO USE PREMIUM....OR PULL THE PLUGS AND LOOK FOR BLACK SPECS ON THE PORCELIN...IF ITS GOT THEM IT HAS PRE-IGNITION/DETONATION....EVEN WHEN YOU CANT HEAR IT!!!

I did a long grade in low range in Death Valley with no issues. And a couple of trips to Sac last summer.

I'll pull a plug when I change oil next time and look for black specs.
