the steering gear box (NOT the pump) on the yj has been leaking for some time, but it's finally bad enough it has to be fixed. i got a seal kit for the input shaft. has anyone done one of these before, and how tough is it to do? wondering if the box has to be torn apart, or if the seal can be replaced without removing the box from the vehicle??

Im pretty sure it has to come apart.....usually they are pretty cheap to buy reman from shlepp-boys or any parts store....I usually just replace them!!!If you havent ever had one apart they arent that much fun...and even tend to leak afterwards because the output shaft is loose and wipes out the new seal anyways......

Saginaw designs I have done a few. Yup it has to come a part, good time to learn. Why is it leaking? Are you straining it? If so this is a good time to increase the flow and get more ass behind your turning.
Just make sure you have 2 cans of BrakeKleen, rubber gloves, and butcher paper to cover your work area. Cleanliness is a must with boxes.

X2, when mine starts leaking, or gets too sloppy, I take it down to Napa, and get a new remanufactured box. My time these days is worth more than the $1xx.00 for a box. They are not much fun to re-build, and I seem to wear out the internals about the same time as the seals, so...
