So I haven't tig'd in years and just aquired a new tig welder and was wondering what rod I should be running to weld chromoly steel with? Got a bung welded in the cast aluminum intake manifold in the duramax for a boost port, that made it all worth it :Big Grin:

3/32 rod would work well for nicley fitted joints. Certianly not as forgiving as mig as far as fit up. And I would ask for some chromo rod at the welding shop. or at least ask them what they would recommend.

Well what alloy are you using? 4130 ? I have just used reg steel. Sometimes I use stainless filler as it melts in good with all steels just about.

see thats what I didn't know is what rod I should be using, i'm just trying to weld some skid plate mounts on the aftermarket swing arm I got for my 700R and its out of 4130 tubing. Only thing i've ever really tig'd was aluminum too except for way back in school we had to do steel too. I gota say though it has been fun playin with it again and I just read some where you can use the foot pedal on some stick welder machines to control them too now that would be cool

X2 (or Howard)

we use ER70S on chromoly at work. welds fine.
if your going to heat treat whatever you weld, you'll NEED TO USE 4140

also as SMASH mentioned above stainless works fine too (either 308 or 316)

that definitely is a trip too cause you wouldn't think it would weld being dissimilar make ups, bu tthen again I don't know shit about stainless other than stick welding it.

stainless has a lot of the same properties as chromoly
