I have a 700r4 built and ready to go and also have a dana 300 built (4:1, Twins, HD output) but have to get an adapter for the 300 to 700r4. Would it be easier and about the same price to use a 27-spline input (th350) 203 range box and mate it to a 300 using a doubler adapter and gain the extra 2:1 for just a couple more inches in length. Is there anyone out there that has done this or has insight it would be appreciated.

You can get a factory 700 to 208 adapter, change the input on the 300, and it will bolt up with minor work. For $150 you can adapt you trans to the 300 so I'm pretty sure that would be way cheaper than doing the 203 doubler.

the 700r4 if its a 4wd model 81~84 it has a 27spline output. Stay away from these! 84~87 also had a 27spline output. The best 700r4s are from 88~92. they have a 30spline output. Call advanced adapters.

Throw a 203 on there and get the adapter for the 203 to 300.
In double low good luck stopping.

All 700r4's were 27 spline output just like the th350's until they became the first of the 4l60's which later became the 4l60e computer controlled tranny. They are different mainly by the rear connection with the 700r4 being just like the th350 (4bolt square pattern) and the newer style having the six bolt hexagonal style. And the 89 I have sitting in my garage with my rebuilt one is a 27 spline. Here is correct info from Novak's site. Any year k-case can be upgraded with the new parts so the year of the tranny isn't really essential anymore.
The TH700R4 is an automatic shift, four-speed overdrive, longitudinally positioned transmission. It is now considered to be one of the finest overdrive automatic transmissions ever produced.
History
The Turbo 700 was introduced in 1982 as a response to fuel economy pressures, and to be phased in as the replacement for the TH350. The transmission was available for both car (RWD) and truck platforms. The transmission's principal new feature was its 30% overdrive. It also sported a lower-than-usual 3.06:1 first gear, popular for off-the-line acceleration as well as off-road torque.
There were some initial bugs in the earlier versions. A feather in GM / Hydramatic's cap was the fact that they stuck with the 700R and followed through with improvements and upgrades. 1987 and newer transmissions are considered to be refined and very reliable, as indicated by their OEM installations against performance 350 V8s in sports cars and trucks. Earlier transmissions are affordably given all these upgrades to put them at the same high level of durable service and performance. Aftermarket building techniques and parts upgrades make this transmission very capable of Big Block power in race, street and off-road applications.
In 1990, the 700R4 was redesignated as the 4L60 (4-speeds, Longitudinally positioned, 6000 lbs. GVW). This was a change in name only with no significant mechanical changes associated.

The original question was if anyone had experience or insight with the combo Not the 700r4 transmission. I did 8 months of research on the 700r4 before deciding on it, mainly by talking to GM tranny builders and such. The "rumors" and general dislike out there is fairly unfounded I came to learn since the tranny is almost identical internally the th350. The major difference being smaller clutches and the 4th in the r4. But pump, gears, shells, etc are the same strength wise. Mine has a 13 vane pump, beast shell, raysbestos clutches, kevlar bands, corvette servo, etc. And to clarify, the idea was to be able to use the 2:1 or 4:1, essentially using it as a three speed. I know that 8:1 is insanely low for an auto and wouldn't be used.........

Brian dacus in reno has a 2.28 in one case for the dunes and runs a 4.1 for crawling he said he just switches them out the 4.1 is to low for mobbing at the dunes. For some reason he hasn't got a adapter to run dual tcases.

I WENT WITH THE 203 DANA 300 BECAUSE I FIGURED I MIGHT NEED THE 1.96:1 AND NOT THE 4:1 AT SOME POINT. I WENT WITH THE JEDS MACHINE ADAPTER AND IT'S KICK ASS

What do you drive 1sawb? And are you running an auto or stick? This input is great.....now I need to find out if the 700r4 to 208 adapter will work for the 203 input and if the output shaft on my 700r4 is going to be the right length. How thick is that jed's adapter?
