View Full Version : Oil priming a sitting motor?

After 6months of sitting the 4.3l in my Toyota is ready to fire up. should i turn it over for a little while to get the oil pressure up then try to get it started? Or should I pull the distributor and drill prime it? The oil cooler, remote oil filter, and lines will hold about 2 quarts.

THE RIGHT WAY IS TO PULL THE DISTRIBUTER....BUT IF YOU ARE NOT WANTING TO FIGHT THAT HEADACHE...MAYBE JUST PULL THE PLUGS AND SPIN IT WITH THE STARTER FOR A MINUTE AND DROP THEM BACK IN...IM SURE IT WONT HURT ANYTHING!!!!THE BIG BLOCK IN MY CAMARO SOMETIMES SITS FOR EXTENDED PERIODS......I USUALLY JUST CRANK IT WITHOUT THE COIL WIRE UNTIL THE OIL GAUGE COMES UP...THEN FIRE IT UP!!!!

No but they have a shitton of heay assembly lube on them that keeps them lubed for extended periods of time.
That being said I'm used to fawking with engines that sit for years/decades and I do this:
Pull plugs inserts 5-10ccs of Marvel Mystery Oil.
Reinstall plugs.
Pull valve covers, visual inspection coat with whatever thinish oil you have (5-30W or whatever) and let it over night.
Next AM fire rotate engine by hand a few times then that sucker up!

I watch a 350 get started that was sitting for a year and a half last weekend. All he did was pull the ignition wire for a minute cranked it over till oil pressure was about 20psi then fired it up. I seen them prime big blocks on the hot rod shows. right before they start them, but those are fresh motors. Not a 150k 4.3l that was fired 6months ago.

START THE STOP WATCH NOW. ITS A MATTER OF TIME. WHEN I START SHIT THAT HAS BEEN SITTING AND I HAVE NO WAY OF PRIMMING THE PUMP I ALWAYS. STATIC TIME IT FIRST. IF ITS A CARB I FILL THE FLOAT BOWL WITH FUEL AND FIRE IT ASAP AND GET THE RPM'S UP SO THE LIFTERS WILL SPIN ( FLAT TAPPET)

It's stuff like this that makes me glad I drive a tractor. My 40 sat for 18 months. The 2F fired right up and the lifters quited down within a few seconds. Good thing I didn't know I was going to ruin my engine.:rolleyes:
Domestic cars aside, how long do you think it takes to get a car from Japan to the US on a container ship? Then how long before it gets to the midwest? I would say those engines sit for a fairly long time, I wonder if they screw with them before they load them on the transport trailer?

thanks for the funny ass read between the two of you. I said fuck it and pulled the spark plugs, cranked it over for 30 seconds then put them back in it fired up and ran smooth after the air in the fuel lines cleared out

Pulling the plugs helped out because I whe hearing some grinding from the starter. I had to add a .020 shim.

well to be honest my motor sat for 7 years....I drained the oil and added fresh oil and some lucas oil and just started the bitch....so it wont run for 200,000 miles...doubt the rest of my rig would last that long anyways.:Big Grin:

I HAVE BUILT CLOSE TO 100 ENGINES IN MY LIFE AND I HAVE YET TO HAVE A FAILURE. THE LAST TIME I LOOKED AT THE OIL MANUFACTURERS ON THE FRONT PAGE THERE WHERE PEOPLE ASKED WHY IS THE THRUST BEARING FAILING IN MY LS1 OR MUSTANG. THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT THERE MAKING BREAK IN OIL'S THAT HAVE HIGH ZINC AND PHOSPHATES LIKE BRAD PENN ( OLD KENDEL OIL) JOE GIBBS,AND A FEW OTHERS. I HAVE DONE QUIT A BIT OF RESEARCH FOR MY WORK AND I WOULD BE MORE THEN HAPPY TO E-MAIL IT TO YOU EVEN THOU MOST PEOPLE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING AT. THE BEST OIL RIGHT NOW ON THE SHELF IS IS ROTELLA T BUT THEY HAVE TOLD EVEYONE THAT THIS IS ONLY FOR A SHORT TIME AND WILL SOON HAVE TO REMOVE MOST OF THE GOOD SHIT TO MEET THE EPA STANDARDS.

IM PRETTY SURE TONS OF PEOPLE JUST FIRE UP SITTING ENGINES EVERYDAY WITHOUT A SECOND THOUGHT....WITH NO ADVERSE EFFECTS!!!!YEAH IN A PERFECT WORLD EVERY VEHICLE WOULD HAVE A PRE-LUBE SYSTEM THAT WOULD RUN BEFORE IT EVER LET YOU TRY TO START IT.....NO IT DOESNT HURT TO SPEND MORE TIME AND PULL THE DISTRIBUTER AND SPIN THE OIL PUMP IF ITS POSSIBLE!!!

you are very right. i do actually have two stock cams that are flat that have came in one toyota 22r and one pontiac, you both bring very good points and yes squirties engine is stock.
