Yea super duties are dirt cheap, but they are usually in the 120k+ range at which point the things are almost falliing apart with Ball Joints, Unit Bearings, and Torque Converters.
I really like that Duramax, but there must be something wrong with it.
I was looking last night and saw a couple 04 dodge's with low miles for 22-26k range. I'm hoping they will drop even further!

seems fishy... i bet he had (or has) it hopped up... someone isn't going to put a winch bumper and mud tires custom rims on a truck like that and leave that motor alone...how good are those things once you start cranking on the juice? is that the pre-alison tranny?

says the guy with a rolled ford ranger
didnt you help him change the spark plugs in that 7.3
when I bought my dodge i was looking at 7.3 fords, hard to beat them
If I could pick and choose, I would like a newer ford with a Cummins
Nissan just made a deal with Cummins for there new HD truck line, wonder if its the same as the 6.7 dodge
seems like the older trucks, (before 05) got better mpg, my 04 is cat free, with minimal emmisions, gets 20mpg if I dont get into it
our new 08 psd at work has not got over 7 mpg, our 05s get 14 mpg with a ambulance box on a f350 chassis

So you were only able to knock 300 off the price, I'm assuming you did not pay sales tax as it is Cal. Or did that price include Nevada sales tax.

Pretty sure you pay NV sales tax when you Reg it. One nice thing about buying used vehicles from a NV resident is that you don't have to pay it, certainly could save you some coin! But it appears all the good deals are over in Cali :frown:

He could avoid it somewhat by "buying" it over the internet via the posted ad... I know i've done that on some items (even in person), but never a vehicle.

I thought that NV used NADA values for all vehicle sales, unlike CA where you can "alter" the amount you spent, and base the sales tax on that.
Im not familar with vehicles salesd in NV, but if both buyer and seller are from NV, there is no sales tax? wow thats a good deal

YEAH HE WANTED ME TO PAY TAXES ON IT AND I REMINDED HIM I AM FROM NEVADA......LUCKILY THE CALIFORNIA PLATES ARE GOOD ON IT UNTIL JUNE '09.........:cool:AND YEAH I DIDNT HAGGLE TOO MUCH AS I LIKED THE TRUCK AND WOULD HAVE PAID ASKING PRICE IF HE WOULDNT HAVE BUDGED.....I DID MAKE HIM FILL IT UP WITH FUEL TOO.... SO FIGURE ANOTHER $150!!!
I WOULD HAVE PREFERRED TO BUY LOCALLY BUT THE PRICES AROUND HERE ARE STUPID HIGH......DOWN THERE THEY HAVE TO GIVE THEM AWAY TO GET RID OF THEM.RENO HAS ALWAYS BEEN A BAD PLACE TO BUY VEHICLES....JEEP CJs CAN BE HAD CHEAP DOWN THERE...UP HERE EXPECT TO PAY 30% more.......:frown:
I PUT THE TRUCK ON THE RACK TODAY THE ONLY LEAKS WERE THE PINION SEAL AND THE LEFT FRONT CALIPER....ROTORS WERE PRETTY DARK(LIKELY FROM NO TRAILER CONTROL)SO I REPLACE BOTH FRONT ROTORS,BRAKE PADS AND LEFT FRONT CALIPER(ALL MOTORCRAFT PARTS:eek:)......AND ORDERED THE PARTS TO DO THE REAR TOMORROW......AFTER SOME FLUID SERVICES ILL BE GOOD TO GO FOR AWHILE....FOR THE PRICE I PAID I DONT HAVE ANY PROBLEM INVESTING SOME $$$ TO MAKE SURE IT IS ALL UP TO PAR.

I FINALLY HOOKED UP THE TRAILER LAST NIGHT AND TOOK MY TWO SEAT BUGGY INTO WORK AND BROUGHT LO-BUDGET BACK......
AND I GOTTA SAY THIS NEW ONE BEATS THE HELL OUTTA THE OLD ONE,WHEN I HIT THE HILL JUST AFTER MCCARRAN OVERPASS GOING NORTH ON 395.......I COULD GO AS FAST AS I WANTED....OVERHEAD CONSOLE SAID I WAS GETTING 15.5MPG.....
GRANTED I WAS ONLY TOWING 4500-4800 LBS BUT IM SURE IT WILL BE AS GOOD WITH MY TWO SEAT BUGGY ON BOARD GOING UPHILL!!!
AS A SIDE NOTE,THE REASON THE TARD THAT OWNED IT BEFORE DIDNT HAVE A TRAILER BRAKE ON IT IS BECAUSE THEY COULDNT FIGURE OUT HOW THAT YOU HAD TO INSTALL RELAYS AND A FUSE IN THE SYSTEM TO MAKE IT WORK.......THE BEST PART IS THEY COME IN THE GLOVE BOX WHEN YA BUY IT........I HAD TO ROUND THEM UP BUT EVERYTHING IS WORKING GOOD NOW!!!!

its.... good enough.. for the time being. a SERIOUS lack of fundage is slowing me down. i need 6 new tires before the snow hits, im wearing well past the tread indicators.
after that, my trans is limiting me... and 2k is a very far off proposition for the custom trans i want to have built... then ill have enough holding power to start adding in more fuel to the CP3.
at the moment im pretty satisfied. it REALLY needs a good muffler. the drone from the stacks make me want to jam a garden stake through my eye after driving it for more than an hour straight. otehrwise it has enough power to really make it move, and surprise anyone who rides in it, along with the ability to speed past cars in the fast lane at over 20mph faster than they are going.... while towing my jeep. i can accelerate up any hill i want even when i have 9k hooked to my hitch. EGT's are under control with the water meth injection. im a happy camper at the moment.

We used them back when we still had trucks with mechanical pumps to rebuild them for us, and i've heard that about them with chips also, but like what your talking about with a 40 hp tune or more is not going to do any damage ot the motor or life of it if the EGT's are kept in check. We got 14L and up Caterpillar motors that have been turned up to way more horse power than stock and they are pulling 9axle trailers with a gross wieght around 280K pounds and are holding up fine to 750-1million miles which in our line of work is great. I am not big on K&N's in diesels and think the factory filters are better for mainly turbo life. If you do get a tuner for your truck I'd look into the SCTLive wire ones cause they can be customed tuned buy you or you can use one of their already canned tunes, and they got a few other cool features, like I think they are adjustable on the fly. heres an airfilter you might like

ONE OF MY MAIN THINGS IS I DONT WANT THE GAUGES EITHER....WITH ALL MY MODDED VEHICLES I OWN NOW ITS KINDA NICE JUST TO GO DOWN THE ROAD AND NOT FEEL I HAVE TO KEEP AN EYE ON A GAUGE TO MAKE SURE IM NOT MAKING THE EGTs GO TOO HIGH AND BURN UP MY MOTOR.

Straight pipe the exhaust at least 4", and then get a Edge Juice w/attitude with the A Pillar mount.
Then you'll get the best of all the worlds. Stock tune, tow tune, High Performance tune, (for when you want to smoke someone out) and customize the interface for 4 vital features, and you can set-up audible warnings for engine temp, trans temp, EGT's, etc. That way you don't have to keep an eye on it.
And just because the stock truck doesn't have EGT gauge Doesn't mean your EGT's can't spike to dangerous levels! Even on a stock tune with the edge while towing I've seen the EGT's spike. Granted it was towing a fawkload of weight, but it still makes you wonder.

the life of a diesel engine is directly proportional to the amount of fuel you put through it. the more fuel it consumes, the shorter its life span. it is a well known fact in the diesel arena; and it stands true in every other auto realm.
many diesel guys detest K&M filters along with every other wet filter out there... reason being the turbo and the massive amount of pressure that the filter is handling. no body wants filter oil coated over their impeller and intake runners. most high boost trucks(anyone seeing over 30psi) will run a dry element type filter to prevent this.
that said, there will never be anything wrong with a cold air intake and a free flowing exhaust. a good quality programmer will make your engine more efficient than stock, giving you better fuel economy while creating better throttle response and more overall useable power. just dont do any more than that if you want to stay safe... dont be like me!!

gauge sets are generally recommended for anyone who tows heavy; even if you dont have massive power adders. you probably dont have anything to worry about with the single seater, however if you start getting up in the 10k hooked to your truck and up range... its cheap insurance.
fried trannies can happen to anyone.
for people who dont really like to look at the traditional A pillar setup, edge and a couple others makes some really nice low profile digital screen multi gauge/programmer units that you dont even have to have turned on if you wish.

Edge's customer service is great, the tunes were pretty good, but the box's for GM's suck and would shut off randomly causing your motor to die and loose power braking(dunno if the fords are diff but the gms were doing that and a lot of people had it happen) The other reason you guys may have seen high egt's with the edge box on stocks is it still advance's the timing even on the stock tune.

thats kinda interesting that you felt EGT's to be an issue with having a lot of timing... i love having my timing cranked on my smarty programmer just for hastle free towing and hot rodding around town with never being able to pass 1200deg.
i know that edge has their junk dialed in pretty well for the dodge trucks.. i hadnt heard before that they have some oddball issues with the dmaxes. from what i know from friends who have fords and run edge stuff.. it seems pretty dialed in also

oh yes it will likely change all sorts of fun parameters!
my programmer manufacturer finally came out with a fully user adjustable program to reflash my programmer module with. now i can indepenently adjust timing, rail pressure, torque management and shift defuelling in addition to having 9 different power levels. in effect i created my own personal custom tune, to my own spec's. i have a crap load of timing for lower EGT's and better mileage, and about 30% of the fuel its capable of to try to get the smokey-ness under control. the soot on the inside wall of my stacks is literally starting to cake on... effectively narrowing them from 6" to like 5.5" DANG!!

What can I say, I have a few friends who are *kinda* into the diesels, and they like to talk.... A Lot. Mainly about dodges, the ford guys aren't nearly into it as much. I've done my research, as my next truck is a 5.9 dodge, and will be getting the aforementioned mods.
The guy in the picture is my friend Dustin from down in Auburn, that picture was taken in Sutherlin Oregon on our way back from Dunefest at winchester bay. It's an 06 Dodge with Edge, intake, and 4" exhaust. 6 speed manual with 550 hp clutch. (the name skips me) He also has a predator tuner that get's double stacked on occasion (see video below!). It was a long drive back, that's how I know the EGT's got hot on stock tune, there wasn't much to talk about so we talked about safe and unsafe egt's. If you still don't believe me, here is my F150 and quad next to his trailer at Sand Mountain on Memorial day 08. It's an 07 48.5' weekend warrior, scaled in minus truck weight at 23k lbs loaded.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e248/nrminime/DustinsTrailer.jpg
Rnd 2!
These are a few more from the same group of guys I go quad'ing with.
Keith, 07 Megacab (5.9 of course), full turbo back exhaust, Edge w/attitude, 6 speed, leveling kit on 35" A/T's. He tows a 36 ft weekend warrior, 12k lbs dry weight on tow tune. His clutch slips on levels 5 and 6, needs an upgrade sometime soon! He takes it all over Sand Mountain. The first Sand Mountain trip we went on with it, he double stacked it (with less then 2k miles on the motor!) for a couple runs up the mountain. Towing his 5th wheel back, we stop in Fernley at Sonic. "Dude, your engine's knocking bad!!" Needless to say, the warranty didn't cover the damages  so he bought a low mile 03 motor, and installed it himself. Oh, and his dad is a mobile Cummin's Technician, so he had a little help. Before this truck he had an 06 Crew Cab Long bed same khaki color, with the same mods as his 07. Before that, he had an 01 6 spd on 40's/38's, and finally 37's, injectors turbo edge clutch gears, the works. It was bad ass!
The Other guys in the picture, Justin's 02 dodge 5 speed long bed with Stacks, Edge w/attitude, and a nitrous setup, leveling kit on 35's. the 03-05 on the right is Chris who lives in Sparks. He's got Edge w/attitude, and an intake, leveling kit, 35's.

Another guy who has more money then brains, he owns a drywall company over in Cali, his 45' weekend warrior and 08 F350 crew dually. He gets stuck every time he goes to the mountain, he finally got smart and now unhitches his trailer at the main road, and has one of the dodges pull it into place. I shit you not, true story! BTW I don't know any of the idiots trying to pull him out. 1 more notch on the reason I'd never buy a super-dooty.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEp5dmu15Xk
If you want to see a few more pictures, check out my myspace album from Labor Day.
So I've had some first second and third hand experience with diesels, gone through the trials and tributes of modding them, and have the benefits of knowing where to start from their years of trials. And I haven't even touched on the ford side of the friends, but they hang out in Big Gay Truck land a little too much for my tastes! But a little repertoire in the list of vehicles from that side includes: 96 Powerstroke, 99 7.3 F250, 01 7.3 Excursion and F250, 03 7.3 F350, 04 F250 Harley Davidson, and 08 F350 Crew Long. They didn't dive deep into the performance aspect of them, but spent their money on big lifts and big tires. Most of those were bought stock, and lifted for 37's, 38's, and 40's. I think the 99 7.3 work truck and 01 f250 never broke the 35" barrier.
So Tony please Forgive me if I think I might know a thing or two about diesels...

I didn't even notice the dinky mirrors. I assume those are the lariat power mirrors or something? Much rather have the extend/foldable mirrors, those work great.
I like auto's driveability, but am more of a stick fan for a tow-rig. Stock tuned, sure I'd 100% rather have an automatic. But when you start stacking performance goodies in front of it, it shifts heavily to the manual. Throw in a clutch, and go to town on the thing. No it's not going twins or anything heavy duty like that, but intake exhaust and a tuner for sure, maybe even stacked on occasion.
I got to tow my buggy with Jesse's DMAX last night, and it actually did better then I expected for a stock everything, I really like the allison in it. They are even cheaper and easier to come by then the dodges? But I fawking despise IFS!!

I can tell you when I had my '99 2500 longbed... I sheard off a 1/2" grade 8 bolt on my trackbar mount....granted it was lifted and I was very kind to the thing...but that was a BIG pita... and my (now retired) co-worker has replaced his trackbar probably 3 times or more in the last 3 years on his '98(ish) 3500 dually...and it gets freaky deathwobble when its time....he never was able to find anything to fix it, being stock or aftermarket replacements...
That black dodge looks sweet...but its too pretty to be a tow rig....:gapteeth:

I have a moral issue with a 1-ton 4wd truck having IFS, but once you get past it you'll realize that the Chevy front end is as reliable as anything else out there and drives better than any other truck on the market. I wanted to get a Dodge too, but my truck came along at the right time and was the right price. I don't regret it at all.

When was the last year for the 7.3 because that is what I want in a 6 speed. Although the 1/2 off on 1/2 ton trucks that they are selling over at Dodge is tempting also, maybe if I wait a couple more months they will be giving them away :gapteeth:

I know two people with dmax's for sale both are 4door short beds. I wouldn't worry about the IFS being a prob, i've had 315/70R17's on my truck since it was brand new (no lift) and haven't had any bushings or trouble with the front end and its got 70K miles on it.

Do your research on the different programmers on the dizzle boards, I don't know much about the powerjokes in the tuning department.
IIRC the 7.3's didn't have a CAT, and you can just straight pipe it from the turbo back removing that Giant fawking muffler, and still be smog legal :Big Grin:
they aren't as loud as a straight piped cummins either.

That does seem like a huge claim...but then again have you seen what all those guys that sell air intakes claim on diesels for power? I don't get how some people fall for it, I mean comon its not like its a N.A. motor its freakin boosted. Only reason I see takin off the cat in a diesel is if you need to lower EGT's or just want a loud ass truck, other than that they really don't hurt much especially if your not leavin a black cloud every time you take off

All three, and check please! :Big Grin:
Not really that loud, I know 3 straight piped 7.3's and they just sound good, especially the increased turbo whine
Lower EGT's means you can make more power, more power means your going to want to blow more smoke

are they raising the weight limit or what ??? I wanted to have mine weighed to see what happened...it has to be close, but if they are raising it, I guess that would just be a waste of time...
and I did 4" turbo back (but kept the cat, just kinda hollowed it a bit ) on my 6.OH-no and I gained a little mileage, not sure why/how...but who cares and it seemed to be a more peppy off the line too....

actually if you think about it a cat is like a muffler, it makes them a lot louder. I've got first hand experience and if you wanna here the difference come to my work and you can hear a big truck with one and one with out.
lower egts doesn't mean more power at all, heat can actually make more boost, think about thermal expansion, thats what spins a turbine.
You'd like the new chev, one of my employee's has one and they ride nicer, are more comfortable (stock have way more power) and the integrated brake controller does kick ass.

I've thought about this one long and hard, and I'm not sure I'm following you. Say it with me...
A Cat is [like] a MUFFLER, it makes them a LOT louder???
Mufflers are meant to baffle the exhaust gases making them Queiter, thus the term Muffler. Taking the Cat off definitely makes it louder.

I was referring to when combined with tuners that add more fuel and air into the system. Too much heat is dangerous, and this is your EGT's and why you monitor them. More air in, more air out, lower EGT's. But, you know this already so I'm preaching to the quire here

Ummm, let's just say that it looks like it is still on there, has to be to pass smog.
I did chop of the stock muffler, they are very restrictive. In it's place I put a Walker BTM (big truck muffler), I got from summit. It's a straight through muffler, runs about $50 and gives you probably 70% or a little better of an expensive exhaust system. No drone, and you can't tell any difference until you get on it, then it has that cool straight exhuast diesel sound. :Big Grin:
Once you change the exhaust on a 7.3, they do tend to loose a little of the power right off idle, but they more than make up for it at higher revs. With yours being an auto, you probably won't feel a difference, on mine, I could just because I bought the truck new and have a lot of seat time in it.
I put a Ford AIS intake on it, with the fender sleeve. Other than that, she is stock and I like it. With my 10' cabover, trailer and land cruiser to Moab and back, she pulled fine. No plans to add power, mileage and power are good, so I am happy.

That is the best way to get an exhaust. And yeah, I don't think with the 4.10's you will notice a loss.
I'm not sure on the mileage. Believe it or not, it has always gotten 18-19mgp empty. I'm not as anal about checking the mileage empty. I do know that if I let it drop below a 1/4 tank, I can get 600 miles on a tank, without the low fuel light coming on.
I am much better about checking it when I am on a trip, which is usually with the cabover installed. I usually average between 12-14 with cabover, although I put a tank through it a month ago driving around Yellowstone, speed limit of 45, I averaged 17mpg w/ cabover on. So if I could keep the speed down to 50mph all of the time, I imagine it would pull some serious mpg. :gapteeth:
To Moab and back with cabover, pulling trailer with cruiser on it, mpg dropped to 10-11.
They are amazing trucks.
