YES!!!!! Very happy for the Jason's!!!

Berger (navigator / co-driver) has been a long time friend. His and my FIRST Rubicon trip was a 3 day'er in a willy's in highschool - 1988 i believe.

WAS CHEARING FOR THEM THE WHOLE TIME.

don't laugh - i think i had "pegged" legged paints and a mullet - but that was the shit at the time. this wasn't the actual Rubicon trip, but the only "old" picture i could find quick - about the same time-frame!

Whats funny is there were a ton of locals and nobody ever came over and offered us a hand down there to see if we needed help getting the rig out, or help to get it fixed so we could go wheeling again:rolleyes: Luckily total strangers went above and beyond to help us get our rig off the trail after it sat there for 30 hours.

Well the oil pump did fail on Wednesday night, and it did sound like the crank was welding itself to the bearings, but thanks to 1sawb on the board and Mike Shaffer brought us down the correct replacement parts for the motor and were up and tuning on Thursday afternoon! Anyways the radiator fan failed at racemile 12 so we didn't make it to the first pit until about 11:15 am. We managed to snag a new fan off someone elses buggy, but the shifter cable had failed earlier in the week and at the bottom of aftershock we lost the ability to shift from inside the car. about racemile 40 and 2:30 pm we decided to call it and head back, as we had already missed the check in time for CP 2.

Up until the failure we were fully getting it and had caught up to Jason Conover from S&N fab who had built a twin of DSI's car to race with. He started 36th in the race. I can't count how many broken rigs we passed before racemile 10, but Jesse was one of them. Eventually he caught up with us and we had a little 'encounter' in the high speed before racemile 23! About 60 mph we were side by side and we hit a sage brush mound about as tall as the tire with the passenger front tire, which launched us sideways into Jesses rig on two tires. Our roof bar hit Jesse's door bar, Jesses mirror hit the top of our roof, Jesses tire hit our hood and actually rubbed the paint off the shock tower, and our mirror never touched his rig. We hit and bounced off of him and landed on all 4 tires in a straight line, it was fawkiing awesome!! There were some people watching I'm hoping someone got it on Video...

Anyways some pics!! No there aren't many, I was too busy racing noobs!

That's shitty bro!! I got to Sledgehammer around 9:30 or 10 and nobody was really by the rig, just a few people scattered around. I asked a few people about it and they said the owner was waiting on a welder and that was it. I try to help out anytime I can, if you don't, karma's a bitch, and it's just the right thing to do.

You should have said HI slvrbck! We had the best seats!
After LCQ we thought we would run slegde. The jeep was having motor issues all day but I was very happy with the way it was walking up everythiing. In all everything worked reall well just a lot of fine tuning and re-working a few things.

We got to the last obstacle and busted the panhard bar off, then the steering column came off the orbital..then we couldnt get the motor going...then tring to steer it with the starter and whinch we bustd the winch line...

It was all good though meet some awesome people and they were ROVA owners! They stayed with us untill late thurs night to make sure we got it out of the way. They offered up all there tools, fuel pumps, and they also burnt up an alternator trying to weld on my junk. Finally got it out of the way with ratchet straps and the starter motor and a whinch. Then gave keith and I a ride back to camp in a very nice ride.

The next morning we got up there re-wired everything and the jeep fired right up :Big Grin: We rachet straped the panhard down and then just kicked back on the jeep on one of the best sections of the race (so we were told by many racers). We didnt get the jeep out untill dark after the race, The wheelers for christ came out and welded the panhard up, very nice guys. Also the west coast rovers were a huge help. They came back up near the end of the race to make sure we were gonna get out. It was nice that some people that we didnt even know went so far out of there way to help us, while we talked to a few locals and then never saw them again...

Was an awesome race. I got a lot of videos and pictures but will post them up tomarrow. I just got my jeep off the triialer.. Got a video of s.cambell running over another racer  Oh and he wasnt even in the race!

Hey Wix you forgot to mention that your battery was arcing sparks up the entire trail as well! Things definitely went to hell for us on that trail but we still got it out. There was a guy who came down and had a rear busted pinion on his rockwells with 54" boggers. He got wedged like a mofo when he came down that obstacle.

This year is different, they just had a bunch of big rains down there thats changed things around a bit. I didnt really see anybody walk right through accept for Greg who was with us. The only trails I saw were Backdoor and slege hammer. slege hammer was pretty easy untill I broke... When we ran it there was a total trafic jam. It was a constant line of rigs. We didnt get any pictures since none of us brought our cameras out... The last obstacle was pretty undercut and if you didnt get it just right you were screwed. Walker evens was running it right in front of us and it was kicking his ass, but shaffer was in front of him and I think he went up with some whinching no problem. Then Greg went right up with no whinch. I think you would be surprised at how many racers had to whinch up that spot or sat there for a while tring to get it.

Didnt get to run back door since I really wasnt prepared to break my jeep again. So my son and I just went and watched some other guys do it while greg floped his rig on full of hate then turned around and I think he ended up on claw with some guys from Az. Then when greg got back we all went up to back door to watch and saw plenty of rigs get floped over.

I think its pretty bad ass since you have all them trails so for a week long trips its worth it but I think for just a quick trip we got more up here. And I think there might be some new trail that may have about 2-4 other posible cayons around it?????

I would definately be down to park there next year, I could probably fit my 40 right in front of where Wix' rig was up against the canyon wall......would be out of the way I guess.

Did you see that slapnuts run off with the plaque from the rock?? That dude was running like a scalded dog dude!! I have him on video when he ran past me and homey was a fucking flash in the camera!!!

Well shit, I didn't even know it was you cats. I was standing there the whole fawking day. I was balls deep rolling those rigs over too. That last 1 seater that pinched a hyd hose left a very nice Maxxis track on the back of my arm when we were getting him winched out of the way. I was getting pissed at the jackasses standing around watching us get fawking herneas rolling rigs over. I said a few nice things to a couple of them.

Shit is crazy, I bet I leaned on that Irok where SV was a million times that day.

This is me and the wifey in the pits bout 30 minutes til racetime. Might recognize my ugly mug. Funny thing is, my wife was just behind where you broke around the corner and I was standing by yall most of the day. I spent more time with you cats without even knowing who you were than I did with my wifey! She was on Miller Lite watch!!

Well for somebody that was going to take it to a checkpoint, he was sure as hell moving like he had stole a purse from an old lady. Hopefully he took it to someone though.

Shit was alot of fun!! There was a ton of peeps up there gettin' shitty. I was waiting for somebody to either fall off or get stoned.......and not in a good way that requires a lighter.......

Yeah, I had her posted up with the beers. I stayed up there where the carnage was happening at. She enjoyed her spot back there. There was never anyone in her line of sight all the way to the mouth of the canyon. The only question I have is whether I actually drank as many beers as were in my cooler, or she was peddling them off for some side cash.

Next time we all go to a big event, we need to get a picture profile thread going so we know what everybody looks like. Kinda like the racer line ups on KOH.com, but for the drunk wheelers/spectators......:Big Grin:

Talked to Jason Berger last night, and he gave me the play-by-play deal on the whole race from his and Scherer's perspective. They got help i think in that same spot. He said the rule was stated as NO ONE could help you to make forward or backward progress! When they rolled, Scherer radio'd to an official and asked that question. the official gave them the go-ahead. so i guess it is ok, to roll you back over, but not to push forward or backwards. i guess it makes sense. it has to be this way, or "team" playing may come into affect, and racers purposefully block the trail once their team mate has gone through. not really neccessary in the desert sections, as you can always drive around, but in the rocks i think it is critical to keep the trail passable.

on another note - i think anyone that has cut the coarse should be DQ'd period. it appears that some have, but others just got penilized with time added. also, i think Shannon should be banned from next years race. he knew he was DQ'd and continued anyhow, possibly ruining another teams chance at finishing/and or winning.

I was standing by his back tire when he was on his side. Shit was funny, Pistol Pete was damn near climbing in his rig asking him if he wanted us to flip him over. I kinda felt bad for the driver, he was trying to call on the radio and ask and there was a million people asking if he wanted help, some saying don't do it, some saying fuck it do it, and Pete in his grill.

Right up the canyon after that Tom got hung up and I can gurantee Shannon has an Irok print on his hood. Tom went to back up and climbed on his hood and Shannon nailed it in reverse and got out of there before he was on top of his cage. It actually set Tom up so he could get thru.

I also agree. Everyone including me thought it was pretty bad ass at the time. I thinik Greg put it best when he said if you aint bumpin you aint racin. But after finding out he was dq'd I thought it was pretty f-d up. Not only could he have ended the race for #52 but he also held up the racer in back of him. But what about what some are saying about the KOH officials telling campbel to go ahead and run for time? If thats ture cant really blame Campbel, and sounds like KOH needs to re-think some things. We also talked to some checkpoint guys after the race and they said they asked shannon to get off the course, but he didnt even slow down.

don't know if ya'll are following the drama on Pirate4x4, but it's getting pretty deep over there. it does appear that an official did tell shannon he could continue. i'm getting tired of reading (one thread i think went 20 pages in one day).

one thing i do think they need to re-think is: IF YOU CUT THE COARSE (ANY PART OF IT) YOU ARE DQ'd, or you go back to the previous check point and then continue. coarse cutting needs to be verified at every check point. in no case should coarse cutting get you a time penalty. that section you cut could have been the deciding factor if you finished or not - IT HAS TO BE COMPLETED, not a time penalty given. So Randy Slawson - YOU ARE DQ'd!

like any growing sport, there is surely some growing pains with this race. it sucks to add a bunch of rules to a somewhat "open" race. you will always get people that play the rules to their full potential and reading between the lines constantly.
