Timing

I haven't used a timing light in over thirty years. Can somebody give me an "Idiots guide" to timing lights?

the one i got now is pretty cool. you set it to 0 and adjust the timing to be right on the mark then you turn a knob to retard or advance the timing and then rotate the distributor so that the timing marks are right on the money again...its like a timing light for dummies. Cool!!!!

I have a Craftsman I've never taken out of the box, it came with the tool set. I don't even remember how to hook up a timing light. My FJ40 never needs the timing adjusted but I think it's a little off in the FJ60 I just got. I was going to change the plugs,points, rotor etc. this weekend.
