don't they have a number and manufacturer on them? i have purchased just 1 or 2 pistons before from Aims in reno when i had a similar situation. if nothing is wrong with the others there is no sense in buying a whole new set unless you want to change compression ratio.

THERE SHOULD BE A PART NUMBER ON THE PISTON

KB 136, so I,m guessing keith black, when I go to summit they have a kb 136 piston with quite a few differnt options , but I only saw them in sets no singles.

like i said, try Aims Machine 359-8866 or any engine machine shop should be able to get singles. i'm sure you can find one in the Carson area too.

After doing alot of reading, A propane motor does tune a little differnt than a conventional gas motor. When I bought my propane kit I was told advance until it pings then back off a bit, and throw as much compression as you can at it. Turns out thats not 100% accurate. After doing some research turns out america has the best refining method of any other contry. averages 105 to 115 octane all the time, So compression is deffinatly one of the answers. according to the calculator I was at 11.5:1. Sure with our alltiude I was less, but I don't think that was the problem. Turns out timming is everything. On a gas motor (old school american V8) where 6 degrees initial, and 30 total advance is good, not so good for propane. At 6 degrees my motor wouldn't even bearly run. So you turn the intial timinig up to 12 degrees and the thing runs great, but your total advance goes close to 37 degrees resulting in a major ping followed by piston breakage and worn rod bearings from piston still trying to finish compress after firing. (It was acualy hard to hear a ping with open cab and exaust screaming 6000RMP up horsepower hill.) It basicly comes down to advance curve. I have a MSD distributer so I can change the springs in mine and get a 12 degree intail, and 27 degree total. Less the curve better for propane. My old worn out 302 with hardly any compession ran great really far advanced no ping. I got a new 351 at 11.5:1 and the combination of the two was disaster. I don't see alot of propane guys out there, but if there is , hopfuly this will help. The cracked intermediate housing, and the twisted input shaft are just a bonus.

the input shaft is from what, trans or tcase?
ThrottleJunkie
November 23rd, 2009, 09:38 AM
Input shaft is between motor and trans. Looking through Summit, they offer a chromoly shaft for the mustang guys, Looks like I can get one for around $150. Very happy to find in garage, rather than in some steep crazy canyon. The intermediate housing is cracked, so I can either have it welded with high nickel rod, or try to pre-heat it to about 400 degrees with rose bud then mig weld really hot.(its cast)

Dont mig it. drill a small hole at both ends of the crack, preheat (very hot) then use nickel. Ive never done it but thats what I learned in school :gapteeth:

I'm going to see james later today. Keeping my figures crossed! So who can weld cast the right way? Is high nickel rod for ark welding? Any input on this would be helpful.

dont forget to pean it with a hammer or as I did on DSI's rear axle I used steaves needle air gun it's got like 20 or so rods inside that hammer into the metal after you weld it that releaves the stress from the weld and material as it cools and trys to crack and slow cool it with the rose bud or a propane heater to bring the heat back down from the almost 400 to room tempature witch is what I did with my front 3-link on the pumpkin on the 60 worked out perfect and the same with DSI's witch I think you checked out the other day :Big Grin:

For sure tryining to get everything right, allready got new springs for distributer to change timming curve, I'm a little nervous for the four week mark on the Hammers. Some tranny parts on back order. They should be here in about a week in half or so. Paul Jr. said once all the parts show up its only a few hours on a bench, so that will be nice. They recoated the cam so I will have to rebreak that in again. Once the cam is broke in again and it warms up a few times, then I have to tear valvue train apart to re-torque heads and ad heavy valvue springs back in. But I will try like mad to hit dead line.

Not real great with all the specs, I know its 1970 high nickel block. its been zero decked with stock high nickel rods and crank. The heads are DOOE heads. They have been ported and polished, and shaved to the limit. Keith Black big dome pistons. Erson TQ30 cam. 3/8 Chomemoly push rods. PBM roller tip rockers, All this stuff, HP should be at least 75 (right....)
Tranny is C4 1800 rpm stall (waitng on) full rebuild with new steels and Kevlar bands and clutches, Lower 2.75 first gear with steel planitary gears (waitng on) and revers manual valvue body, and cool TCI second gear servo.
I don't even know if I listed everything right or not, I ARE A CARPENTER. ME NAIL WOOD WITH HAMMER!

yeah, all the sponserd guys test their shit for the 1st time in JV, why shouldn't you?
that engine sounds nice, I have the same 351 block and heads as you sitting in my shop, waiting for the 302 to go boom, not familar with that cam, but im betting you are about 350hp, so lets just round it up to 500, that sounds better, better run it rich on that propane, until you figure it out, i know of guys who switched to LPG, and blew their motors, because they thought they had enough propane going in
I also am running a c4 that i rebuilt with better stuff, if you need any help rebuilding the c4 let me know, i have done a few now, its easier than an engine.. 1800 stall should be good (mine is 1400-1500, and i like it)
im sure you already know this, but i think that is a 28 oz flexplate with that motor, i found out the hard way on my 5.0 which is 50oz,
I have seen them build a complete engine and tranny on EXTREME 4x4 in 30 min, and it works perfect, so you should have plenty of time:Big Grin:
seriously, dont rush it, test that thing 1st
