View Full Version : Potential canyon bed

I've been eyeballin' this canyon for a couple of years now and yesterday I had the time to walk the entire length but it brought some disappointment. There is really only one way in/out with a questionable obstical at the beginning....theres an old footing for what I believe may have been part of a placer operation at this camp.....most buggies could probably find a line around it but it would require some maintanance for a rig like mine to get past. Maintanance.......the trail entrance would easily need a day for it to take shape as one with lots of shovels and wheelbarrows and beer. From there for the next 1/4 mile or so til the end of the trail only light labor is needed to clean it up. What makes this trail impossible is downstream there are two narrow vertical waterfalls about 5' in height......further down is a narrow opening in the rock that is not even 4' wide in spots and easily 10' deep or better :complain:
Check out the pictures and Im curious to hear some feed back if it seems like something that some of you would be interested in investing some time in.

Well its within two hours of Renob. Yea the rock is BAD ASS! Its a transition between Quartz, Slate and Granite. The fines in the bed are all Granite. For the most part the rock does have fine texture and all the walls have at least two lines that I would judge a rig like mine could tackle to lines that the buggies you guys on here have would tear up :Big Grin:
I did my best to photograph the terrain but you have to be there to truely see how enormous the canyon walls and bed surface are. All the rock you see is absolutely huge. Theres a couple slabs you could easily wheel two-three wide......maybe lol.
I walked and walked after I came across the first two "no go" waterfalls thinkin well a full on buggy w/knowledgable driver could possibly make it over even w/a winch but I stopped at the "hallway" I would call it.....I didn't catch a picture of it.
http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac165/BMIexploration/152.jpg
This needs a little clean up between the wall on the right and sand on left.
http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac165/BMIexploration/149.jpg
Just beyond this Rambler is a sick group of rocks and shortly after that is a large enough area for everyone to turn around and head back up.
http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac165/BMIexploration/167.jpg
First bad spot downstream from turn around area.
http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac165/BMIexploration/170.jpg
Further down.....They look a little more intimadating in person but ya never know, I feel pretty safe saying it can't be started from the bottom unles we do some blasting.....Hell who'll bring the beer for that one?! LOL!

March 19th, 2010, 12:01 AM
whoops.....sorry, here is the picture with the Rambler and just over the edge from it is a nice group of rocks before the turn around.
Yea I agree with you Blue,,,,,,Something that you can have a blast at with some technical wheeling and a moderate rig but not need to tear shit up or have a full purpose rig

Is there any area to park a tow rig? Looks like a good trip for sure. Im down to drive a few hours for a fun looking canyon like that.

Cha, there is. The road to get into the mountains is county maintained 6 days a week and my outfit waters it (well their gonna have to start after I threw his ass under the bus....my job sucks and the owner pissed me off so HA). Its a narrow road along the hillside to get to the canyon opening but not very far in at all, then sittin between these hills that hide this mine camp outta sight is a fairly large opening that some wood planks and piping can be moved to allow even more parking.
Right now weekends or time off is really un-predictable for me right now but Im hopin within another week or so things will smooth out because they're supposed to hire another hand to relieve my shift to allow me to take time off.

Aw come awn Steve........Your bro would probably even approve of the road getting to the parking area. (stoopid fawker voice on) HA HA! I didn't take a picture of where we can park because that sh- is boring but its right at the opening of the canyon and its hidden off the roadway so all of our sh- will be safe.
Theres yer parkin area :mullet:

I think we can make something of it. At least give it a good day so we can all walk it gather a few more opinions in person. I haven't met most of ya anyways.
Two hours south.....well if yer foots in it. Like I said good graded county road to get into the mountains then just a short little one lane road around a hill to get to the parking area. Its narrow but level without alot of garbage or hassle. The best we can do is start throwin out some future dates and try and pin it down from there.

Why do I need to be selfish? The nearset town is Hawthorne, well you can still spit and hit this place. I probably won't even be around here within two weeks with the way things are lookin. I know alot of you guys are interested, to the very best of my knoweledge the land is open and isn't nobody gonna give a rats azz if people wanna wheel this canyon. I already talked with a landowner of 6000 acres at the lower mouth of the canyon and she gave me full permission to have it.
95 south - Hawthorne - 359 south approx 5 miles to Lucky boy pass/Bodie road. West on Luck boy to top of switch backs approx 4 miles up into old mining tailings. At the last hard left switchback there is a goat trail to the right leading along a steep hillside into wide open parking area at the top of canyon. There are deep incline shafts so anyone with kiddies beware in this area.

Yea I knew you were Dave.......Damn I sure mis tellin you to get my flippin truck greased and tires rotated SNAP SNAP! lol Can I please have some used steer tires off of shinys 141 or a damn dirt haulers??? Nothin but the best for the best rig Rich had right? She was a good 'ol tractor, just couldn't convince management of that. :sure:
Well Id love to be able to check this place out with some of ya'll but depending on how things go I might not be around here too much longer cause I may be taking a transport job in Wisconsin this week. So......Its better I tell somebody where this so that way everybody can enjoy it if it turns out to be a good canyon. If Im still around, it would probably be in my best interest to put power steering back on. Anyone got a power bot for a 75 f-250?:Big Grin: I've got all of the plumbing and pumps I could ever need but I've only come across one box and it was actually in a 78 f-250. The box Im talking about still utilized the drag link out board and paralell to the frame and was a direct replacement for the forward mounted manual boxes. If not I could rig up the assist cylinder garbage. It would just make it easier/faster to get my rig thru there.

I'm still waiting to get my rig back then i'm sure me and dave can plan a trip down his rigs ready to roll now.

Is it still around locally?
What do you have goin on with yours Steve? Mines ready on the trailer, just still has the manual steering. If Im still around that would be awesome to head down there. I'll be sure to give someone a detailed map of the place in case Im gone though.......Maybe this weekend I'll be able to break away for a day so we could check it out........I've got two guys in training right now to take my spot, so I could probably let them destroy some sh t for a few hours while we play in the canyon. Pretty damn far...But everytime I drive that way Im always lookin at some of the terrain and the possibilities of the trails that can be out there. If there is a few other potential trails in the area then it would be worth a weekend :dunno:

Well I cant plan anything for this weekend. Im on plant feed drivin day shift. Thats funny 2-3 days, yea kinda for some people, for someone like me if I blink or listen to one song on the radio Im there. Travelin is my thing so distance/time dont ever bother me but its like Wix says if there are other possibilities than it would be worth while. Yea, I think so. Theres a sh t ton of canyons and trails all over that mountain range that I just haven''t had the time to stick my nose into. Im in those hills everyday for work but usually Im so beat after shift I dont feel like explorin.
As far as the primary canyon that Im talkin about. It really is a trip, my camera cant capture the depth or shear size of some of the faces. The way I was thinkin is some people come down in an econo box and everybody walk it and put together some ideas and a little trail work before loading up or driving rigs that far for a trial run.

I can't make it out this weekend, being work on sat and easter on sunday. Tfabs doing a long arm 3 link in the rear, and a long arm 4 link in the front and pushing the front axle like 2" ahead and mounting 14" coilovers in the front to help clear the 40's. Then they doing 3" air bumps on all 4 corners.
