This is posted in Marks thread on the dana 300 also...

So...not sure if we are talking about the same issue or not... but (here goes a partial thread jack )

So i'm running my CJ around town and everything is great then, pop...no go forward, checked to make sure I had it in gear (T-5 sometimes pops out of gear on me), it was in gear... i coast out of traffic... and play with it.. shifting etc.. and it goes, but not that great, i pop it into 4wd HI (1 click down) same thing... no go... play with it somemore, shift the 4wd to neutral and back to 2wd and 4wd...all the while with the tranny in gear and not... I get nothing... i lock the hubs and pow..I can move... try 4wd Low, w/ and w/o the hubs lock that works... so its just 2wd HI and 4wd HI... what gives? is that the rear output going to shit on me? bad internal gears (kinda sounds like grindage/rubage)... is that the springs you guys were talking about in here (though I though that was for the shifter, not the actual gears)... this is the first time this has occured...

I nursed it home in 4wd HI...and tried 4low again worked, then for shits and giggles 2wd and it worked to get me into the garage...

IDEAS??? Suggestions etc... all is appreciated... I have a spare D300 but it was intended for my YJ project... but I would like to address whatever the issue is... I never did adjust any linkage on the case or Transmission when i lifted it... (has about 5-6 total, 1" body mounts, 2.5 YJ springs and 1.5-2.5 ish on a shackle flip...

Heeeelp!!!

Thanks all,

Chris

SINCE 2WD HIGH IS STRAIGHT THROUGH THE CASE FRON THE INPUT TO THE REAR OUTPUT I HIGHLY DOUBT ITS A "GEAR" PROBLEM.....

I WOULD GRAB THE REAR OUTPUT AND SEE IF IT IS LOOSE.....IF IT IS, ITS POSSIBLE THAT ITS LETTING THE SLIDER RING MOVE AND UNLOCK IT...CREATING NEUTRAL.

HAVE YOU TRIED DRIVING IT IN 2WD AND HOLDING THE SHIFTER IN 2WD HIGH???

IT IS POSSIBLE THE DETENT IS HAVING A PROBLEM,BUT THAT PRETTY MUCH IS A TOTAL CASE DISASSEMBLE TO FIX......

OTHER CAUSES I CAN THINK OF....

BENT SHIFT FORK
VERY LOW ON OIL-BUT IF THIS IS THE CASE ,OTHER THINGS ARE DAMAGED!!!
WORN OUT SHIFTER MECHANISM(STOCK ONES WERE SLOPPY WHEN THEY WERE NEW.....)

So it looks like I will swapping in the other case and tearing into this one.....ugh! I guess I could make the most of it and put in an HD output while I am at it...

I drained the oil and it very well may have been factory original oil from 84, it smelt awful...but there was plenty and a dime size amount of metal shards... It doesn't seem to be popping out of gear, I seems something is slipping or not engaging because I will grab in (2&4hi) and then not, it will not and then suddenly jerk as if the gear is catching... Looking twinsticks and new dent springs and I'll spli the case and see where i am at... I wanted 4:1 maybe his is the time, now if only I could find it for a good price...

WELL IF YOU ARE THINKING OF GOING TO A 4:1 I HEARD TO BUY THE JB CONVERSIONS ONE AS IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE BETTER THAN THE TERA LOW ONE.....THOUGH I HAVE TWO CASES WITH THE TERA STUFF.....

GET THE GEARS...A REBUILD KIT.....TWIN STICKS AND THE HD OUTPUTS.......OF SPEND $500 MORE AND GET A BRAND NEW ATLAS!!! YOUR HANDS WONT EVEN NEED TO GET DIRTY....AND THE ATLAS USES THE SAME ADAPTER AS THE 300......:gapteeth:
