Come AWN spooge you know my last rock buggy had a 30 spline dana 60 in the rear, a stock full width chevy dana 44 in the front and the only thing I ever broke was a front u-joint and that was in a 4000lb cj5 with a AMC401!!!
I think I can make it live, a 9inch isnt that much stronger than a 44 and if I keep breakin shafts I will buy the GUCCI 300m versions.TADOW!!!BLING BLING

No its keep it cheap and easily repaired. If I wanted 60s fr and rear I already have one but I want light weight.A front 60 weighs 650-700lbsx2 it is too much.I think a front dana 44 is less than 400lbs X2 +400lbs for a civic mtr and trans+wheels and tires??+chassis less than 300lbs I am hoping to build this single seater to weigh less than 2000lbs -the driver.Small is the key, chassis no wider than 36 inches, possibly narrower.37 inch tires. I need to find a running Civic to get the motor trans ,harness, and c/v axles from first because I need the running gear to even think about building a chassis.
But with the price of gas Civics are now desireable cars again.

What about running Toyota minitruck axles if you want to keep it light? They are lighter than a 44 and with 31 spline Longfields they seem to laugh at 40" tires and being bound up in the rocks. The rear might be iffy but if you kept it light enough I think that it would work.

I'm trying to visualize how you get the power from a transverse enginee/tranny to work for a four wheel drive. I have a couple of ideas but could you explain to this noob?

You mount the transverse engine inline and then the transaxle that would normally transfer power to the front CV shafts acts as the transfer case and instead of CVs you run driveshafts off of the transaxle. Most transaxles are geared around 4:1 too so you have a cheap low geared transfer case. Matt Peterson from Rockware has a buggy running a Saturn motor and drivetrain in this configuration.

Thats how I figured it worked, I didn't know trans axles were geared that low so I was woundering how you got the reduction.

September 13th, 2005, 10:05 AM
Are you gonna weld the spider gears in the transaxle or do they sell a mini or full spool for the import racers? An air locker would be sweet for manuverability, but ARB has probably overlooked the Civic :D . Those Rhino buggies :barf: run the same engine setup except I think from a newer car, with ford 9's and 35s, they have sold a few of those without exploding the drivetrain.
Dirty Harry
September 13th, 2005, 12:48 PM
Yeah the Rhino RTVs run a similar drivetrain but I have been trying to block them out of my memory. :shh:
I think that most guys (not that many people have done this) just weld up the transaxle. You can get spools for Honda transaxles from CircuitWorx (http://circuitworx.com/products.html) but there goes your inexpensive transfer case.
MR.ROCKAPE
September 13th, 2005, 07:13 PM
I was planning to split the transmission case and weld it up.I have had a few of those trannys apart before so it will be easy. And a civic trans should be more durable than most other makes because it is a gear driven automatic.Meaning no planetaries!!More like a five speed than an auto.Instead of syncros, sliders and shift rails it has a clutch pack on the shafts for each gear.As the gear is selected the clutch pack locks the gear to the shaft just like a manual trans. And it uses less power than the other autos out there.
I havent been able to find much on the gear reduction but I know my commuter car pulls away nice(but its a manual) and add another 5.13 in the axles and this buggy should crawl along nicely.
And one other reason to use this engine is I am very familiar with the fuel injection on these engines so less $$ to spend on making it run right.

Whats a drive line disconect? How does that work. :scratchhe
A driveline disconnect allows front wheel drive only or rear wheel drive only so that you can do front burns/digs to make really tight turns. Some transfer cases (like Toyota cases and welded up transaxles) do not allow you to select front and rear drive independently, like an Atlas or Dana 300 does. I am not sure why you would need disconnects with an Atlas though or how you would mate an Atlas to a Honda motor???

Unfortunately all of the photos that I have of it involve it sitting. :( I haven't really worked on it lately, I only pour money and time in it when the motivation comes. I have some issues to work out with the turbo motor before it is really streetable, the stock ECU doesn't like the bigger turbo and injectors. Fortunately I have plenty of other things to drive. :yup:

I know why you would want a disconect  :D , but I have never seen one. Rockape is not adapting a transfer case to the Honda motor, the transmission is sideways and is the t case ( no adaptor needed)
Would you put this disconect on just the rear, so you could only do front burns? Rear driveline would probably be too short to fit one. Is it like the axle disconect on some front ends?

The HONDA motored buggy did have some issues, under alot of bind it would unlock the trans and only turn the front or the rear,as far as the disconnects go its just a splined collar that goes over your shaft & its hooked to a lever so when you ingage the lever it slides that collar down and locks the splines together....King Bling used to run them on his 1st or 2nd buggy. The problem is that under a bind they don't like to disengage like an ATLAS would. :D

Spoon?? I think that guys AWOL in Mammoth CA. for work, but I'm not sure. Probably dosent have a computer up there yet. Mabye he has managed to kick his reno4x4 habit
What rig is the 3 link going into?? If its a street driven rig, even a road racer or drag car, .120 is more than enough. I am guilty of overbuilding some things, and underbuilding others, but looking at what drag race guys use in thier links, 1.25 x .120 is heavy duty even with a big HP car. Most drag 4 link kits have 1.25x.095 tube! Gotta keep that shite lite.;) Then you got rockcrawlers with 2"x.375 lowers, totally on the other end of the spectrum. It just depends if you got any bending load on the tube.
