axle regear advice
I have a 14FF installed on my rig (3.73)
The D 60 I am about to install is a 4.11
I am wondering which axle to regear.
The 14 Bot is lincoln locked and the D 60 is open.
The D60 is aready out so that is one less thing to do to have it regeared but I would be swapping in a taller gear set.
Not sure that really matters cause I am buying a plate to make the 203/205 doubler
Not sure there is much of a price difference in regearing either axle. I am pretty sure the 14 is the smaller carrier so that would need a new carrier for the big gears but if I am going to do the 60, it is going to need a locker of some kind.
What do you guys think?

THE 14 BOLT IS 100% EASIER TO SET UP...PLUS YOU CAN BUY THICK GEARS SO YOU CAN KEEP YOUR CARRIER.....BUT I THINK 4.10 IS THE BREAK ANYWAYS....4.10 AND DOWN...4.56 AND UP.........
I HAD TO BUY A THICK GEAR SET WHEN I PUT THE ARB IN MY OLD BUGGYS 14 BOLT.....SINCE ARB ONLY MAKES THE 4.10 CARRIER STYLE LOCKER.......AND I NEEDED 4.56s

I vote 14 bolt as well. Much easier to setup. I was surprised at how simple the setup was really. Not that a 60 is really hard, more time consuming than anything else.

What tranny you running? What tire size? 4.11 seems tall...even with the doubler. But back to your original question the 14 bolt easier to setup. It sorta really sounds like both axles need something...

NOW IF YOU GOT SOME $$ I WOULD RECOMMEND RE-GEARING THEM BOTH TO 5.38s YOUR TRANS WILL THNK YOU FOR IT.......I HATE MY 4.56s........
NOW AS FAR AS STRENGTH IN GEAR SETS GO ,I HEARD THAT 4.88s IS THE LAST DEEP RATIO BEFORE THEY START TO GET WEAKER FROM LACK OF PINION CONTACT........
IF I HAVE MY WAY MY OTHER NEW CHASSIS WILL BE 5.38s......MY TC REPLICANT IS 4.88s SINCE THATS WHAT THE FR 60 HAD IN IT.....

As stated, either way you swap, you're not dealing with carrier breaks. the D60 is 4.10dn and 4.56up the 14bolt uses the 4.10 carrier for everything aftermarket.

im assuming your putting this in the rig in your sig? 4.10s are going to be super high for 39.5, you should probably go to atleast a 4.88 or higher

yes, going in my trail rig in my sig. Think even with a doubler the 4.10's are to high?
and to answer an earlier question.

Tranny is a T400 and tire size is 39.5
I agree that the 4.10's are probably a little tall but money is a restraint and I have never set up gears before so I would have to pay to have them done. Other wise I would regear them both to at least 4.88's or deaper.
I can regear the 14B my self, I think it is as easy as just putting on the new ring gear and playing with shims until the pinion depth is correct. I am not confident enough in my skills to try to regear the 60 and trust it.
I dont have the tools to get it done anyway, the only thing I have to get the job done is a press.
Thanks guys, guess I have to save up some bucks and get them both regeared, anyone have any good experience with a particular shop that I should try out?

I am in Silver Springs, so not much of a hike to Reno, I usually in Reno about once a week anyway. I have to go to the VA Hospital fairly regularly.
The 60 is not in the truck yet and the 14B is easily enough taken out.
I have been reading up on this.
From Randy's Ring and Pinion, the gears and master instal kits will cost $624.42 plus shipping.
Can you give me his number so I can find out what he will charge to instal so I can figure out how much this is all going to cost me, thanks.

Thanks for the advice guys
A friend just happened to have a 4.10 gear set sitting in his shop taking up space and I got it from him.
So that is what I am going to do until I get so sick of the tall gears and have to regear to something deeper.
I got lucky with these too, the gears are installed on an open carrier and the pinion is still bolted in its housing, the bearings and races seem to be almost new and I think I might be able to reuse them, havnt decided if I am going to take that chance. So all I have to do is weld up the diff and I should be good to go!
